The trading curve.

Initiation-  Every trader comes in thinking they will make money, in fact if they have never traded, they probably have convinced themselves fully. They spend time looking for all the answers in charts but it is in the process. It seems like easy money.  It is not easy but it is probably the best way to make money.  The best of anything takes more work.

Wearing off of novelty– This is a critical time for any trader.  This is where the hole gets deeper or ideally the trader stops and starts to work more efficient.  Process and not charts. This is the motivation to understand what trading really is and who they really are. (more…)

The “secret” ingredients

To be successful in the markets you need to know:

– what to buy (equity selection);

– When to buy it and when to pass on it (risk management);

– When to exit (time management).

The most essential part of equity selection is finding/creating a trading system with positive expectancy. Look for the catalyst/catalysts than has/have the potential to start a big move in the desired direction. There are two catalysts I focus on – earnings related and sector related. I pay attention to price, because it measures the only factor than really moves markets – confidence. It always says more than any other source of information. Reaction to news is more important to news itself.

Risk management has two basic elements: defining risk/reward ratio for every position I consider to get involved in and position sizing (how much to buy, what % of capital to put on risk).

Time management involves taking into account the opportunity cost. How long to stay in a position?

5 Characteristics of Successful Trader

Knowledge – A trader must put in the time and effort to study and learn the proper skills in order to be successful. Whether that is through technical or fundamental analysis, one must invest in their education. They must completely understand their market, and its ideal as a beginner to focus on one market and be a specialist. A part of the knowledge and education is devising a game plan or strategy for trading. Writing down your rules and sticking to your trading plan is a key to success.

 Controlling your emotions – The ability to control your fear and greed is paramount to success. A successful trader will have a balanced emotional state regardless if he/she is winning or losing. Ensuring the trader has a clear head and is able to pull the trigger and take trades every time an opportunity presents itself.

  Patience – A successful trader can sit on the sidelines for days waiting for the proper setup. They don’t jump into a trade just for the sake of trading. Yes there may be opportunities, but the smart trader waits for trades that meet their trading rules and system. Over trading by beginner traders is a big obstacle to overcome. A need to always be in the market will lead to taking trades that are likely too risky. Learn patience, it’s a key to success. A winning trader usually has an extraordinary amount of self control, and often the best trade is no trade.

 Discipline – There are no 100% winning traders and taking losses are part of the trading profession. It is about finding high probability opportunities and managing the risks on each trade. A trader must stick to their trading plan and discipline is the key to success.

Confidence – Having the confidence in yourself and your system to make your profit or take a loss when your method tells you to is a winning trait. Confidence usually comes from experience and knowledge.

What enables a trader to exit every trade the same way, with confidence?

  • Preparation:  If you put yourself in the best possible position and you lose money at least you spent that money wisely.  Good things happen to those that are prepared because 90% of people do not know how to do it or are unwilling.  
  • Purpose: Acting with purpose.  You prepared, you knew the risks, you executed the way you wanted to execute.  In cold blooded evaluation you would do it the same with the information you had at the time.
  • Protection:  Losing the invisible money is how I have seen many people blow up.  Invisible money is not locking in profits or losing more than your plan allowed.  If you lose what you intended to risk you own the trade, if you lose more the trade owns you.

8 Ways to be great

First Principle: Find Your “Why?”

“The reason most people go through life with big dreams but fail to achieve them is because they ask themselves “how” before they know their “why”(9).

Second Principle: Get To Know Yourself

“The perfect trader-if such a person exists-is methodical and careful about making decisions, extremely disciplined, resilient to setbacks, with a high degree of internal confidence.  He holds strong opinions but is also able to admit quickly when he is wrong, not take it personally, and view it as a learning opportunity rather than a failure.  He understands the value of leaving his ego at the door.  He’s willing and able to trust his gut and place big bets when the opportunity presents itself.  In fact, that pretty well describes the ideal blend of characteristics of any successful person, no matter what he is doing professionally or personally” (18-19).

Third Principle:  Learn To Love The Process

“The best traders don’t think about how many millions they need to make each year.  They focus on making the best trading decision they can with each trade they make. And if there isn’t a good trading opportunity right now, they have the discipline to do nothing and just wait. Concentrating on one trade at a time is their process” (38).

Conquering Your Negative Trading Emotions

The trader has two emotions that must be controlled in order to become successful. I call them ‘the two sides of a coin’ and they are commonly known as FEAR & GREED.

The beginning or new trader will first encounter FEAR. There are two types of FEAR. The fear of losing money and the fear of being wrong.
The fear of losing money usually derives from a trader risking money that should be used for the rent, food, children’s education etc. ‘Scared money’ will render one incapable of pulling the trigger when a trade setup comes along. The only way to overcome this paralysis is to be well capitalized with funds that you can risk.
The fear of being wrong is simply that part of all of us that feels that to make a wrong decision is reflective on our personal competency. The cure for this is to simply realize and accept that losses are part of this game. Think about this? A baseball player needs to hit the ball once for every three times at the plate and this will get him into the Hall Of Fame. Whenever you feel the fear of being wrong, just remind yourself that… “My approach for trading has both historically and real-time produced over (number)% winning trades.” This will give you the confidence to step up to the plate and keep swinging. Also tell yourself that the only way to earn the big money is to get into the game. Have confidence in your trading system that when properly executed, it will make much more money than it loses.
So, why is GREED the flip side of fear?
Greed is caused by the fear of not making enough money. Traders who are greedy are often the exact opposite of the ones who are fearful. They have no fear and usually are very aggressive traders, which can get them into big trouble fast. Greed will usually lead to overtrading, failure to follow the trading rules, and not applying the system consistently. One of the biggest problems when greed sets in is the inability to know when to take profits. These traders are so bent on making a killing that they are never satisfied. If they have significant profits they don’t even think about cashing out, as they want more. This often leads to the inability to see the trade turning against them and they will allow winning trades to turn into big losing ones. (more…)

Courage

Not all traders have the courage to stand up to their actions. It takes a lot of courage to deal with the fears a trader must overcome in his career. The first is the fear of success that is so common and is the most prevalent. We want success and are afraid of it at the same time too. As our account grows so does the fear of handling those amounts of money. Could you trade risking a bigger amount as the account grows? Sometimes we sabotage our own success as it puts us out of our comfort zone. Another aspect of the fear of success is the subconscious fear of not being able to sustain that success. Our ego is questioning our ability to avoid messing up and losing that prized status of a hero. Same holds true for a windfall success. We know we might be able to do it again but our ego says we will look bad if we cannot do it again. Professional Traders have developed the ability to methodically achieve success and the confidence to repeat it while reducing the odds of sabotaging themselves via their egos. Professional Traders know that trading is boring and is not full of fun and excitement. That is why they have the courage to give up the fun and excitement in exchange for trading capital preservation. They also have the courage to not become addicted to winning big all the time. They know there will be singles, doubles and losers along the way too. They have the courage to stay on the sidelines at times and miss trading opportunities. They also know when to get out of a trade bravely and have the courage to ask for help when needed. They have the courage to stick to their strategy, ask dumb questions, admit it when they are wrong and finally have the courage to trade for profit and not for pure excitement.

Trader's mindset

How does someone know that they reached the trader’s mindset? Here are a few characteristics:

1. No anger whatsoever.
2. Confidence and being in control of the self
3. A sense of not forcing the markets
4. An absence of feeling victimized by the markets
5. Trading with money you can afford to risk
6. Trading using a chosen approach or system
7. Not influenced by others
8. Trading is enjoyable
9. Accepting both winning and losing trades equally
10. An open mind approach at all times
11. Equity curve grows as skills improve
12. Constantly learning on a daily basis
13. Consistently aligning trades with the market’s direction
14. Ability to focus on the present reality
15. Taking full responsibility for your actions

Trick for Traders

I developed a little trick that might seem trivial, but it is very important. Simply put, anytime to you put a trade on, assume that the trade is going to be a loser. No matter how much analysis, how many supporting factors, or how perfect the pattern is, assume that the trade will lose money. This creates a profound shift in your focus because, rather than searching for and possibly discounting contradictory evidence (which can sometimes be as simple as “I just bought and now it’s going down…”), you will be open to and will readily accept contradicting information. Of course you will, because you assumed the trade was wrong to begin with. When you find confirmation for the trade, it is almost a pleasant surprise. Shift your thinking into this mode, and you will be much less likely to overstay your welcome in suboptimal setups that are not working out–you’ll be far more likely to do the right thing, which is usually to pull the plug on the trade (time stop) and look for a better opportunity.

Now, there’s another piece to this puzzle. A lot of writers focus a lot of attention on confidence in trading, and this is important, but it is a different kind of confidence. You must have confidence in your method and know that a profit is virtually assured over a large enough set of trades, and be able to separate this knowledge from the outcome of any one trade which is, more or less, a coin flip.
