Patience, Preparation and Performance

Everything is difficult before it becomes easy.

With the current volatility of the financial markets, it is extremely important that each of us resolve to be patient in our decisions and not make snap judgments. These can create future disaster.

The most successful individuals around the world have a foundation of processes that they utilize consistently, no matter whether the markets are trending with clear direction or being extremely volatile.

Each of us needs to be patient and allow the trading plans that we use to provide points of execution for trades. We need to be prepared for any and all movements in the market, yet stay committed to our plan and then perform with a self-confidence that ensures that we do not stray away from the steps of our plan.

Patience, preparation and performance surrounded by a solid trading plan along with money and risk management will produce the highest probability for profitable success.

Preparation combined with Opportunity creates a new word I would like to give to you — Prepartunity. Every day provides new opportunities for us. If we are prepared then we will receive the highest results possible.

As a squash player, I was gifted. I had all the right things going for me. I practiced. I was very good with the racket, and I had tremendous anticipation. But I tended to play an errorless game by hitting a slice on my backhand, which took a lot of power off the ball. That wasn’t a disaster, but it was definitely a weakness in my game. My opponents always used to say that on a good day they could beat me, because they could hit more spectacular shots than me. But they never did. I went for about 10 years without losing a game, except to [the great Pakistani squash player] Sharif Kahn. He made about six, seven errors a game—but he also made eight or nine winners. I would make about zero errors per game but only one or two winners. He had the edge on me about 10-4, and I regret that I was never willing to accept the risky shots and confrontations, never willing to play a more error-full game.

In my market career, I took too many risks. In my squash career, I didn’t take enough.

I wish I had applied my squash methods to my speculating. I’d be a very wealthy man if I had.

8 Steps for Traders

1. Find Your Strength.  It is important that the trader determine what type of market, trending or consolidating, best suits their own personality and strength.  The best traders stay focused on one or the other and master it.

2. Know Your Market.  You should know your market when trading.  In other words, know the levels of support/resistance;  know how the instrument you trade moves with the general market; know who is likely to be on the other side and what they are thinking; and “the terrain of any market includes the “long-term charts”

3.  Prepare Your Order.  Know when to get into a trade and why and know when to get out of a trade and why.  Just like a secret agent who will “never enter a room without knowing how to get out of it in a hurry”

4.  Placing Your Order.  Once you have adequately prepared for a trade, it is then necessary to be ready to place the trade when the time is right.  Here “patience is the key…you must be able to wait for the market to tell you when the moment is right.  Wait for the market to generate the action; don’t force it”

5.  Sticking With Your Plan.  This is probably the hardest part about trading.  Once you enter the battlefield (enter a trade), the emotions of fear, ecstasy, greed, and sheer excitement can then take over and cause you to forget your well prepared plans for entry and exit.  You must enter a “Zen-like mental state” where you remain in control of your emotions.  Not doing so could spell disaster.

6. Identify When You Are Wrong.  “It is crucial to your survival to identify in advance whether your view might be wrong and to determine what price level, when broken, would be in support of the consensus view; therefore, you are building up your ability to defend the occasional probes against you”

7.  Holding On To Your Winning Positions.  Set a trailing stop when your trade is moving in your direction thereby locking in profits while allowing the trade to work toward its maximum potential.  “A trailing stop loss keeps you in the war, keeps you in tune with the war, and, most important, leaves you in full readiness to instantly strike again”

8.  Focus On Your Next Trade.  This is the most important step and is saved for last.  This step simply says to start anew with each new trade.  No matter if you won, lost, or broke even on the last trade, the next trade is a new one.  “You do indeed need to be starting every single trade fresh and alert without any baggage from the previous encounter”

It’s been a while since I last posted an excerpt or quoted from one of the trading books I own. Tonight’s small excerpt is from the book: ‘Wall Street. Its Mysteries Revealed: Its Secrets Exposed’ published in New York, 1921 by William C. Moore. The book contains short and to the point chapters like: ‘The crowd mind’, ‘How the public speculates’, ‘Mental suggestion’ and ‘Market advice’ to name but a few. I chose the one on ‘Greed’ as I consider it great advice and timeless wisdom. Enjoy.

An avaricious or keen desire for profits is one of the most prevalent causes of failure in speculation. This weakness is general among traders. They desire “just a little more ” profit. If the stock or commodity bought advances, then that’s proof to them that it will advance further and so they hang on. They usually overstay and thus miss their market. If they fail to obtain the top price and it reacts, then they assure or console themselves by the expression: “Oh, it will come back.” It may “come back” but often it does not, and instead, declines to below the purchase price and frequently results in a loss. The same observations apply to a short sale for a further anticipated decline. It is a good policy to be satisfied with a reasonable profit and be willing to leave some for the other fellow. The market is always there and other opportunities for making profits will present themselves while the greedy trader is waiting to get the last eighth.

Greed leads to disaster in another way. A speculator has started in to buy at the inception of a bull movement. He makes money. The more he makes, the more avaricious he becomes as the market moves forward. His confidence in himself increases until he develops a mental state known in the vernacular as “big head” or “swelled head”. He now has unbounded confidence in himself and “plays the limit”. Soon thereafter the market culminates at the top and the trend reverses, but Mr. Swelled Head is ignorant of this, so continues to buy on set-backs instead of selling on rallies. A drastic slump follows and Mr. B.H. goes to the scrap pile – BUSTED.

Ten questions to ask yourself before every trade

  1. Does this trade fit my chosen trading style? Whether it is:  swing trading, momentum, break out, trend following, reversion to the mean, or day trading? Does this trade fit into the parameters of who I am as a trader, or is it just based on my own fear or greed?

  2. How big of a position do I want to trade? How much capital am I going to risk? Am I limiting my risk to 1% or 2% of my trading capital? Knowing where my stop will be how big should my position size be to limit my risk?
  3. What are the odds of my risk of ruin based on my capital at risk?
  4. Why am I entering the trade here? What is the entry trigger to take the trade? Is this a quantified entry on my trading plan?
  5. How will I exit with a profit? A price target or trailing stop? (more…)

Disaster

When the market becomes volatile or a series of trades produce loses, it is easy for us to become fearful.

We then start to verbalize excuses as to why we even executed those trades or why we use the trading strategy that we use or any of a long list of items.

For all of us as traders to continue to grow, we need to develop a better way to address these situations. The foundation for this is analysis.

If we will be honest and look at the entire situation, generally we had executed a solid trade, however due to the very nature of the financial markets; an unusual movement occurred that caused us to not receive the results we expected. If we do this, most of the time we will see this fear, this confusion or these excuses just evaporate.

Are these times comfortable, never. Chaos is not comfortable, nor will it ever be.

But the successful trader will step up to the plate and handle this challenge instead of succumb to it. Do not allow a challenging situation to become a disaster because of fear or excuses.

10 Common Trading Errors

What are the common errors, the improprieties, the lack of attention to proper mores, the p’s and q of trading that cause so much havoc and could be rectified with a proper formal approach? Here are a few that cost one fortunes over time.10-Common Errors

1. Placing a limit order in and then leaving the screen and not canceling the limit when you wouldn’t want it to be filled later or some news might come out and get you elected when the real prices is a fortune worse for you

2. Not getting up or being in front of screen at the time when you’re supposed to trade.

3. Taking a phone call from an agitating personage, be it romantic or the service or whatever that gets you so discombobulated that you go on tilt.

4. Talking to people during the trading day when you need to watch the ticks to put your order in.

5. Not having in front of you what the market did on the corresponding day of the week or month or hour so that you’re trading for a repeat of some hopeful exuberant event which never happens twice when you want it to happen.

6. Any thoughts or actual romance during the trading day. It will make you too enervated or too ready to pull the trigger depending on what the outcome was.

7. Leaving for lunch during the day or having a heavy lunch.

8. Kibbitsing from people in the office who have noticed something that should be brought to your attention.

9. Trying to get even when you have a loss by increasing your size and risk.

10. Not having adequate capital to meet any margin calls that mite occur during the day, thereby allowing your broker to close out your position at a stop while he takes the opposite side. What others do you come up with?
