Rambo teaches trading

Because we are shaped by our environment, it is important to remember that the longer we spend in the company of the market, so our perception of the market (eg: as an ecosystem, a battlefield, an unequal competition between players, a fight, etc) becomes important in defining us around the edges.

Trading Wisdom :-2500 year old

Sun Tzu, known for his treatise The Art of War, would have made an excellent trader.  The principles he taught for proper military strategy are just as applicable today on the stock trading battlefield as they were 2500 years ago when originally penned.  I have taken the liberty to translate a few of his principles for the modern day stock trading warrior. 

1. Now the successful trader prepares before he enters battle.  The unsuccessful trader makes but a few, if any, preparations before he enters battle.  Proper preparation leads to victory; a little preparation leads to defeat; and no preparation leads to ultimate destruction!  The one who is properly prepared is the one who is most likely to win.

2. In trading, let your great object be a quick and decisive victory, not the slow death of a lengthy loss.

3.  If you know who the enemy is and you know yourself, you will never fear the next trade.  If you know yourself but not the enemy, you will win one lose one.  If you do not know the enemy or yourself, you will lose on each trade.

4.  The quality of entry is like a well-timed swoop of a falcon which enables it to strike and destroy its victim.

5.  Proper preparation may be likened to the bending of a crossbow; decision, to the releasing of the trigger.

6.  Just as water retains no constant shape, so in trading know the market is constantly changing.

7.  Ponder and deliberate before you enter a trade.

8.  To refrain from entering a market that is prepared to defend its current course is the art of practicing patience by studying current market conditions.

9.  He who does not think through his trade while making light of the situation is sure to fall victim to a loss.

10.  Do not trade unless you see there is an advantage in doing so; use not your money unless there is something to be gained.

11.  The successful trader is heedful and full of caution.  This is the way to have peace of mind and to live to trade another day.

12.  What enables the wise and successful traders to trade and conquer, and achieve things beyond the reach of ordinary traders, is proper preparation.

8 Steps for Traders

1. Find Your Strength.  It is important that the trader determine what type of market, trending or consolidating, best suits their own personality and strength.  The best traders stay focused on one or the other and master it.

2. Know Your Market.  You should know your market when trading.  In other words, know the levels of support/resistance;  know how the instrument you trade moves with the general market; know who is likely to be on the other side and what they are thinking; and “the terrain of any market includes the “long-term charts”

3.  Prepare Your Order.  Know when to get into a trade and why and know when to get out of a trade and why.  Just like a secret agent who will “never enter a room without knowing how to get out of it in a hurry”

4.  Placing Your Order.  Once you have adequately prepared for a trade, it is then necessary to be ready to place the trade when the time is right.  Here “patience is the key…you must be able to wait for the market to tell you when the moment is right.  Wait for the market to generate the action; don’t force it”

5.  Sticking With Your Plan.  This is probably the hardest part about trading.  Once you enter the battlefield (enter a trade), the emotions of fear, ecstasy, greed, and sheer excitement can then take over and cause you to forget your well prepared plans for entry and exit.  You must enter a “Zen-like mental state” where you remain in control of your emotions.  Not doing so could spell disaster.

6. Identify When You Are Wrong.  “It is crucial to your survival to identify in advance whether your view might be wrong and to determine what price level, when broken, would be in support of the consensus view; therefore, you are building up your ability to defend the occasional probes against you”

7.  Holding On To Your Winning Positions.  Set a trailing stop when your trade is moving in your direction thereby locking in profits while allowing the trade to work toward its maximum potential.  “A trailing stop loss keeps you in the war, keeps you in tune with the war, and, most important, leaves you in full readiness to instantly strike again”

8.  Focus On Your Next Trade.  This is the most important step and is saved for last.  This step simply says to start anew with each new trade.  No matter if you won, lost, or broke even on the last trade, the next trade is a new one.  “You do indeed need to be starting every single trade fresh and alert without any baggage from the previous encounter”

Is market a battlefield for you?

Have you ever heard something like “The market is a battle, be ready to fight with all you’ve got,” or “The market is a war,” or any variation of this theme?  I bet you have, it’s a fairly common theme. But is it true, or better question might be: is this a mindset that you want to adopt? 
Don’t get me wrong – by no means do I want to present a marketplace as a happy place where  refined gentlemen high-five your each win (hmm, do refined gentlemen high-five at all? or they back-slap only?) and console you with fine whiskey and cigar after each loss. No, they are out to get you just as much as you – them. In that sense, anyone in the market is an enemy of anyone else. But that’s not really the point. The point is, is kind of attitude toward the marketplace and its happenings going to help you survive it, navigate it successfully? Or is it going to undermine your success? 
 
If the market is war for you, you are going to be in the fighting mode all the time. Can you function well for long in a constant fight mode? It’s extremely tense mode which is going to wear you out rather quickly. Instead, allow me to offer you a very different attitude – one where a market is a natural environment for a trader – environment where certain patterns govern all the comings and goings. Is it a dangerous place for a trader? Of course it is. Think of it as of ocean. It’s a dangerous place to be and swimming in it is a dangerous thing to do – just as trading the markets.

10 Trading Mistakes

1. Under capitalization – One of the first mistake I made when beginning to trade was being under capitalized. I started with a $10K account without any idea on how to trade. You need enough capital to learn and gain the experience. Some like to call the initial stake “market tuition.” If you can avoid paying your dues, great for you. But most new traders will lose their money. Just make sure you learn from every loss.

2. Having the approach to trading as a “learn as you trade” – Big mistake. “Learn as you trade” = losing money. Losing money can lead to emotional and financial stress and may even create enough fear in you making it hard to trade. Make sure you come prepared to the battlefield. Be a strategist. Sun Tzu said, “The battle is won before it is fought.” Think about it.

3. Trading as a hobby – Take a look at your hobbies. Do they make money? Hobbies in general are entertainment that cost money. Do not approach trading as a hobby. Treat it like a business. Develop a business plan, have goals, and understand what you want out of trading.

4. Thinking that you know it all – The moment one thinks he knows it all is the moment he has become a fool. Its impossible to know everything about the markets. This is a lifetime learning process. Find your niche…. find your speciality and be an expert in it. In other words, find your edge. One thing I learned in trading is that niche = money.

5. Trading without a plan – One of the worst things you can do as a trader is to trade without a plan. Trading without a plan is like driving in a new area without a map or a navigation system. You are lost. (more…)

Book Review: "Warrior Trading"

Talk about stretching a metaphor beyond breaking point, this book delivers. The metaphor in question goes something like this: “The Market can be likened unto a battlefield”. No arguments there; least of all from me, I’m covered in trading scars.

But based on the above, the author concludes that if the market is a battlefield, then successful traders (such as himself it should be noted) are the new age equivalent of the ancient Samurai Warriors and Knights, carving up enemies and vanquishing any foolish dumb money who dare to get in their way. The mindless herd and the Mum n Dad investors must all be mercilessly put to the sword.
Like a modern day Elric of Melbnibone, the goal of these Warriors of Wall Street is not be the Stealer of Souls but rather the Stealer of Your Money. They ride out each day into the field to seek glory armed with their two deadly weapons (fundamental and technical analysis) plus the third ingredient – advanced mind control achieved by 20 minutes of zen meditation on a Sunday.

The calm before the storm

stormMuch like patience, the successful trader exhibits a simple, unexcitable mood in the face of a market that is in a constant state of flux. There is no way you can have emotionless trading. It is impossible unless you turn into a robot. What is possible is to bring your emotions under control. While others panic, cry, throw temper tantrums (and their computer monitors), doubt their trading edge, etc. you remain calm in the knowledge of your simple rules based methodology. You know when to enter battle, you know how long you can stay in battle, how many resources you can commit to battle ($), and when to exit the battlefield.
