Advantages of Technical Analysis

  • Technical analysis is a bit of a misnomer since it is really not that technical. A better name for the use of charts to make investment decisions might be risk/reward analysis or even market psychology. Sure, there are some complex mathematical concepts involved with some of its more esoteric indicators. But at its core, technical analysis is simply a method of determining if a stock or the market as a whole is worth buying or selling. Once we identify this we are way ahead of the game with regard to assembling a winning portfolio.
  • Simply stated, technical analysis is the study of data generated from the market and from the actions of people in the market. Such data includes price levels that have served as turning points in the past, the amounts of stock being bought and sold each day (volume), and the rate of change of price movements (momentum) over a given span of time. Keep perspective

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: (more…)

The most expensive 4 words

The longer a given condition or trend persist and the more comfortable we get with it, the more dramatic the correction will be when the trend fails. This does not mean that you should try to catch tops or bottoms. Only fools believe that they can be consistently lucky in fading established trends. But when a trend ends, prices often overshoot in the opposite direction.

The crowd may be stupid, but they are stronger than you. Crowds have the power to create trends. Never fade a trend. If the trend is up, you should be long or on the sidelines. Never sell short, because “prices are too high” – never argue with the crowd. You don’t have to run with it – but you should never run against it.

The most expensive 4 words in the world are “This time is different”. The underlying reasons might be different, but the psychology behind all booms and busts is always the same.

What if Money Was No Object?

Alan Watts:

“So I always ask the question: What would you like to do if money were no object? How would you really enjoy spending your life? Well it’s so amazing as the result of our kind of educational system, crowds of students say ‘Well, we’d like to be painters, we’d like to be poets, we’d like to be writers’ But as everybody knows you can’t earn any money that way! Another person says ‘Well I’d like to live an out-of-door’s life and ride horses.’ I said ‘You wanna teach in a riding school?’

Let’s go through with it. What do you want to do? When we finally got down to something which the individual says he really wants to do I will say to him ‘You do that! And forget the money!’ Because if you say that getting the money is the most important thing you will spend your life completely wasting your time! You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living – that is to go on doing things you don’t like doing! Which is stupid! Better to have a short life that is full of which you like doing then a long life spent in a miserable way. And after all, if you do really like what you are doing – it doesn’t really matter what it is – you can eventually become a master of it. It’s the only way of becoming the master of something, to be really with it. And then you will be able to get a good fee for whatever it is. So don’t worry too much, somebody is interested in everything. Anything you can be interested in, you’ll find others who are. (more…)

Market Thesis

thesis-paperPurely academic, non applicable information. Writing them out helps me organize these assumptions into ideas. Hopefully you find some use for them.

1) Trading is like any other business, but not only in the conventional sense. The market is manipulated. The underlining principle behind this statement is that equities market is the same as any other market in the economy, whether it be technology or tube sock market – those with the biggest market cap control movement and direction.

2)While prices are moving in a current path identified by trend lines, heads of market are processing information and making preparations for the next shift. During the time traders see the trend forming and change their “bias” in accordance with the trend, heads of market have processed new information and are ready to take prices to a new level.

3)Technical analysis is a visual interpretation of how crowds behave in relation to price. It does not influence how prices will or should behave. When prices reach a certain level, the technical indicator at that level does not dictate how prices will react, rather, (more…)
