1) Understand the true realities of the markets. 2) Be responsible for your own trading destiny. 3) Trade only with proven methods. 4) Trade in correct proportion to your capital. 5) Manage risk. 6) Stay long-term oriented. 7) Keep trading in correct perspective and as part of a balanced life. The common theme is self-control. As I’ve often said, if you can master yourself, you can master the markets.

Be Responsible
Be responsible for your own trading destiny. Analyze your trading behavior. Understand your own motivations. Traders come into commodity trading with a view to making money. After awhile they find the trading process to be fascinating, entertaining and intellectually challenging. Pretty soon the motivation to make money becomes subordinated to the desire to have fun and meet the challenge. The more you trade to have fun and massage your ego, the more likely you are to lose. The kinds of trading behaviors that are the most entertaining are also the least effective. The more you can emphasize making money over having a good time, the more likely it is you will be successful.
Be wary of depending on others for your success. Most of the people you are likely to trust are probably not effective traders. For instance: brokers, gurus, advisors, system vendors, friends. There are exceptions, but not many. Depend on others only for clerical help or to support your own decision-making process.
Don’t blame others for your failures. This is an easy trap to fall into. No matter what happens, you put yourself into the situation. Therefore, you are responsible for the ultimate result. Until you accept responsibility for everything, you will not be able to change your incorrect behaviors.
The trading curve.
Initiation- Every trader comes in thinking they will make money, in fact if they have never traded, they probably have convinced themselves fully. They spend time looking for all the answers in charts but it is in the process. It seems like easy money. It is not easy but it is probably the best way to make money. The best of anything takes more work.
Wearing off of novelty– This is a critical time for any trader. This is where the hole gets deeper or ideally the trader stops and starts to work more efficient. Process and not charts. This is the motivation to understand what trading really is and who they really are. (more…)
Trading On Fear & Panic
First, no matter what, as a trader it is your #1 job never to put yourself in a “panic” position. No trade, no matter what you think of its future potential, outweighs that rule. If you trade for a living, your goal is always to “live to trade another day” which means tight risk management and taking every step to avoid this situation.
On every trade I make, I know where I have to exit no matter what before I make the trade. If I can’t figure that out, then I don’t make the trade. I learned, like you are right now, that trying to figure out an exit after you’re down significantly in a position never is to your advantage. Right now, you’re emotionally connected to that trade, if not trapped by it. (more…)
An Investment Poem
The newfound opportunity arises softly at first
Like pearl shaped dew drops on a tea leaf
Quite unexpected but fast entranced and immersed
Her presence over the former solitude brings relief
More precious than any amount of money or power
More beautiful than the most stunning of jewels
You cannot appreciate the sweet without the sour
The kind of perfect pattern that makes investors drool
Finding shares to short are most difficult to borrow
But who would bet against an investment with so much potential?
Elation is now the norm starting yesterday, today and tomorrow
The biggest challenge lay in exercising prudential
Potentially an addicted lost cause am I
An investor who has witnessed too many ups and downs
Is it possible to stay grounded or is my destiny the sky?
Disciplined I promise to be, carefully soaking in the sights and sounds
Because true greatness only comes around every so often
Where your hands can’t help but shake and you feel it in your gut
The time is now, the place is here — this is Zen
As nature intended, this squirrel has found his nut
