1) Before you put your capital at risk, have a well-formed trade idea;
2) When your idea pays you out quickly, take some profits;
3) Don’t get caught up in individual trades; focus on profitability over a series of trades and days.
I know, I know. These things sound ridiculously simple. But it’s only been in the 4-5 years that I can look myself in the mirror and say that I’m doing all three consistently. The spinning reverse dunks get the attention in basketball; the long touchdown pass makes the evening replays; and the big winning trades are the ones we like to talk about. The greater part of success, however, boils down to Xs and Os on the basketball court; blocking and tackling on the football field; and following basic fundamentals about framing and managing trades. It may not be sexy to execute on the fundamentals, but it gets the job done day after day and builds a career.

Randy McKay
“One very interesting think I’ve found is that virtually every successful trader I know ultimately ended up with a trading style suited to his personality… My trading style blends both of these opposing personality and put where it belongs: trading. And, I take the conservative part of my personality and put it where it belongs: money management. My money management techniques are extremely conservative. I never risk anything approaching the total amount of money in my account, let alone my total funds.”
William Echkardt
“What really matters is the long-run distribution of outcomes from your trading techniques, systems, and procedures. But, psychologically, what seems of paramount importance is whether the positions that you have right now are going to work. Current positions that you have beyond any statistical justification. It’s quite tempting to bend your rules to make your current trades work, assuming that the favorability of your long-term statistics will take care of future profitability. Two of the cardinal sins of trading – giving too much rope and taking profits prematurely – are both attempts to make current positions more likely to succeed, to the severe detriment of long-term performance.”
“Since most small to moderate profits tend to vanish, the market teaches you to cash them in before they get away. Since the market spends more time in consolidations than in trends, it teaches you to buy dips and sell rallies. Since the market trades through the same prices again and again and seems, if only you wait long enough, to return to prices it has visited before, it teaches you to hold on to bad trades. The market likes to lull you into the false security of high success rate techniques, which often lose disastrously in the long run. Greed and Fear
Greed and Fear are two of the strongest emotions that can have major influences on our trading behaviours and hence profitability.
We have all experienced these, from the inability to put a trade on to the gut ache seeing money on the table evaporate.
Recently I have been thinking of these two emotions in a different light. What I want to propose is that these two emotions have very different “time-frames” of operation, with respect to trading. Now I have
no detailed research or data to back this up, but I felt I’d put this out there and see what other traders thought…
Fear = Short Term = Most likely to be experienced before or soon after a trade is placed.
Greed = Longer Term = Emotion that plays a major role further into the trade timeline.
My rationale here is that it is FEAR that (some) people feel before putting on a trade, worrying if they should place the trade or not, once in a trade it is FEAR that makes them start hoping that it wont go
against them.
With GREED, I think this starts to come in later. For instance, if the position has become profitable, then starts to loose and become negative, it is GREED for the money that was on the table that keeps you
in the trade, not fear of loss. As it usually takes time for the trade to become profitable, the emotion of GREED by association is the emotion that takes longer to materialise. Indeed, I would argue that when
you think back to the trades ‘that could have been’, you are more likely to remember the trades that ‘could have’ made you a good return, rather than the quick losses you took?
Traders need 3 Keys
#1 Trading is not about winning percentage, being right all the time, or predicting the future. What it is about is having bigger winners than losers. If you are profitable after each long string of trades then you are a winning trader in that time frame. You can make money through winning percentage as long as you keep losers small and you can make money through huge wins even with lots of losses. The key is not how many times you are right but the size of your winners versus your losers. That is the magic elixir of profitability.
#2 Trading is first and foremost about surviving, the vast majority of traders not only don’t make money but they lose most of their trading capital. The only way to have a long profitable trading career is to manage risk and survive a string of losses. If your trading losses are more than 1% to 2% of total trading capital per losing trade you are in danger of blowing up your account with a string of losing trades or one big loss. To make the journey from new trader to successful trader you have to survive losing streaks and completely unexpected market action. Trading and betting big will eventually take you out of the game, it is only a question of when.
#3 Trading is one of the roughest things a person can do mentally and emotionally. Even if you win in the markets you have to keep up a large amount of personal human capital in perseverance, passion, dedication, focus, and faith in self and system. If you are missing one of these six psychological elements the odds will be against you. You have to cultivate your goals and drive into a vision of success that you are willing to pursue until you get it and pay the price as you go to have the prize you seek.
