Are You A Subjective or Objective Trader?

Subjective: Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.Proceeding from or taking place in a person’s mind rather than the external world.

Subjective traders they are intertwined with their trades.Their signals are generally entering out of greed and exiting based on their own internal fear. The believe in their opinions more than the actually price action. They base trades off of whether they are feeling good or bad about a particular trade. A subjective trade comes out of the imagination of the trader, from their own beliefs, opinions, and what “should” happen in their view. Many times reality is not even cross checked as a reference, and if it is the subjective traders sees what they want to see instead of what is really going on. Their compass is their emotions and they have internal goals other than making money.

Objective: (Of a person or their judgment) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. Having actual existence or reality. (more…)

Greed-Fear-Hope-Regret

1. Greed could be defined as a trader’s desire to trade in order to provide an unrealistic profit. Greedy traders focus only on how much money they could have made. This emotion frequently leads to ignoring proper money management and often prevents a trader from taking profits on a winning trade.

2. Fear is a survival response and probably the most powerful of all human emotions. When afraid, a trader will sell a position regardless of the price. Fear usually leads to panic, which again causes poor decision making.

3. Hope is what keeps a trader in a losing trade after it has hit the invalidation level. It may be the most dangerous of all human emotions when it comes to trading.

4. Regret is defined as a feeling of sadness or disappointment over something that has happened, especially when it involves a loss or a missed opportunity.

Wealth Principles

  • Your income can grow only to the extent you do
  • If you want to change the fruits, you will first have to change the roots.  If you want to change the visible, you must first change the invisible.
  • Money is a result, wealth is a result, health is a result, illness is a result, your weight is a result.  We live in a world of cause and effect.
  • Thoughts –> Feelings–>Actions–>Results TFAR
  • When the subconscious mind must choose between deeply rooted emotions and logic, emotions will almost always win
  • If your motivation for acquiring money or success comes from a non-supportive root such as fear, anger, or the need to “prove” yourself, your money will never bring you happiness
  • The only way to permanently change the temperature in the room is to reset the thermostat.  In the same way, the only way to change our level of financial success “permanently” is to reset your financial thermostat.
  • Consciousness is observing your thoughts and actions so that you can live from true choice in the present moment rather than being run by programming from the past.
  • You can choose to think in ways that will support you in your happiness and success instead of ways that don’t.
  • Money is extremely important in the areas in which it works, and extremely unimportant in the areas in which it doesn’t.
  • When you are complaining, you become a living breathing “crap magnet”
  • There is no such thing as a really rich victim!
  • If your goal is to be comfortable, chances are you’ll never get rich.  But if your goal is to be rich, chances are you’ll end up mighty comfortable.
  • The number one reason most people don’t get what they want is that they don’t know what they want.
  • If you are not fully, totally, and truly committed to creating wealth, chances are you won’t.

Trading Psychology

Your biggest enemy, when trading, is within yourself. Success will only  come when you learn to control your emotions. Edwin Lefevre’s

 Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (1923) offers advice that still applies  today.

 Caution
 Excitement (and fear of missing an opportunity) often persuade us to enter the market  before it is safe to do so. After a down-trend a number of rallies may fail before one  eventually carries through. Likewise, the emotional high of a profitable trade may blind  us to signs that the trend is reversing.

 Patience
 Wait for the right market conditions before trading. There are times when it is wise to  stay out of the market and observe from the sidelines.

 Conviction
 Have the courage of your convictions: Take steps to protect your profits when you see  that a trend is weakening, but sit tight and don’t let fear of losing part of your profit  cloud your judgment. There is a good chance that the trend will resume its upward  climb.

 Detachment
 Concentrate on the technical aspects rather than on the money. If your trades are  technically correct, the profits will follow.

 Stay emotionally detached from the market. Avoid getting caught up in the short-term  excitement. Screen-watching is a tell-tale sign: if you continually check prices or stare at  charts for hours it is a sign that you are unsure of your strategy and are likely to suffer  losses.

 Focus
 Focus on the longer time frames and do not try to catch every short-term fluctuation.  The most profitable trades are in catching the large trends.

 Expect the unexpected
 Investing involves dealing with probabilities ? not certainties. No one can predict the  market correctly every time. Avoid gamblers? logic.

 Average up – not down
 If you increase your position when price goes against you, you are liable to compound  your losses. When price starts to move it is likely to continue in that direction. Rather  increase your exposure when the market proves you right and moves in your favor.

 Limit your losses
 Use stop-losses to protect your funds. When the stop loss is triggered, act immediately 
 – don’t hesitate.

 The biggest mistake you can make is to hold on to falling stocks, hoping for a recovery.  Falling stocks have a habit of declining way below what you expected them to.  Eventually you are forced to sell, decimating your capital.

 Human nature being what it is, most traders and investors ignore these  rules when they first start out. It can be an expensive lesson.

 Control your emotions and avoid being swept along with the crowd. Make consistent  decisions based on sound technical analysis.

The Ten Cardinal Rules

1. Learn to function in a tense, unstructured, and unpredictable environment.
2. Be an independent thinker versus a conventional thinker.
3. Work out a way to handle your emotions and maintain objectivity.
4. Don’t rely on hope and fear in the conventional sense.
5. Work continuously to improve yourself, giving importance to self-examination and recognizing that your personality and way of responding to events are a critical part of the game. This requires continuous coaching.
6. Modify your normal responses to certain events.
7. Be willing to face problems, understand them, and recognize that they are in some way related to your behavior.
8. Know when problems can be resolved and then apply methods to solve them. That may mean giving up some control in order to gain a different control. It may mean changes in your personality, learning self-reliance, or giving up independence and ego to become part of a trading team.
9. Understand the larger framework in which trading occurs—how the complexity of the marketplace and your personality both must be taken into account in order to develop the mastery of trading.
10. Develop the right mind-set for trading—a willingness to commit to the kinds of changes in personal habits and beliefs that will drastically alter your life. To do this requires a willingness to surrender to the forces of the game. In order to be able to play at a maximum level, you have to let go of your egoand your need to have things your way.

Trading Losses

Those who have chosen this very unique career of “trader” face a mountain of challenges each day based on ever-changing market conditions. Added to the market challenges are emotions, which can be 90% of the game. You can have a great method, strategy and be taught by the best, but if fear, apprehension or hesitation come up the trader won’t take the trade…..this is an emotional block. All successful and experienced traders learn quickly to become the masters of their emotions. To accept and manage their weaknesses and leverage their strengths.

At first most traders start by researching and determining a method to trade. They do little to emotionally prepare for what’s to come. Yet they quickly find out that their emotions come into play early on, especially if they experience immediate losses. Losing money coupled with one’s own emotional “baggage” can impact the minds thought process and outcome.
My work focuses on the power of the mind and in particular the power of thought. These three problems and solutions do too. Nothing happens without the some form of thought, be it sub-conscience or conscience. After all, isn’t this what we’re left with when sitting in front of our monitors trading? What comes into our minds, as we trade can be avalanches of different thoughts. These thoughts then have the ability to assist us and add to our success or become our worst nightmares resulting in multiple losses.

Traders over time, come to the realization that trading will force them to face ALL their old and current emotional baggage and blocks. And that NOT being able to manage or “dump” the baggage, can hit the bottom line quickly.
When a trader’s plan doesn’t work they tend to blame it on the method, when in reality it usually comes down to an emotion causing them to react inappropriately. We can pick up automatic emotional blocks that prevent us from implementing a method effectively. Many try to get over these emotions on their own, but few master the changes needed.

But lets get specific and to the heart of these three trading problems. The first reason traders lose may seem obvious but in reality it stems from long term social conditioning. It’s their inability to ACCEPT LOSS. Losing generates powerful emotions, such as fear, uncertainty, apprehension, and self-doubt especially with men. And while women today can also be as affected, the data is supported mostly by men as they represent a larger portion of the client base.

Men are socially conditioned to succeed from the time they enter the world. From little boys being read, “The Little Train That Could” to the environments that surround them as they grow up. They are guided to be become achievers. Influenced by family, friends, education, and career environments they are encouraged to seek professions of Doctors, Lawyers, and Bankers. Images and social metaphors reinforce them. Striving to be right, number one, the breadwinner, and the best, always seeking perfectionism. They are socially conditioned to be the family providers. Add to this various cultural pressures and demands and men have a built-in fundamental obligation to succeed. (more…)

Calmness

How do you handle adversity? What do you do when the markets go against you? Do you get angry and defensive or do you stay calm and play offensive?

 When the markets go against you, do you overtrade? Do you try to make all of your losses in one deal? Or do you stay calm, take a breather and reevaluate the market? 

When our emotions go up, our intelligence comes down. We make bad decisions. We take it personally. Then we start doubting ourselves and we start losing confidence. Then we start losing more and more…

When we stay calm, we can evaluate the market from an objective place. We can see the market for what it is and not what we want it to be. Then we can take a calculated risk. 

The Same Winning Principles

In life, as in trading, the right mindset is crucial for success. You must be confident in your decisions because they are based on cause and effect, not on emotions or opinion. Negative people who are unsure of themselves are not successful in any field. You need faith in yourself and your methods to be able to persevere and not give up before reaching success.

• You can risk too much and lose it all in your business, life, marriage, friendships or family. You have to measure the potential cost of every action. One affair can cost you your marriage, just like one big trade with too much risk can cost you all your capital.

• In business there are certain methods which bring in customers and turn a profit, and others which cause a business to turn away customers and lose money. Trading is similar: methods which turn a consistent and long-term profit are essential for success.

• Having unrealistic expectations in a marriage, job, or business will lead to unhappiness and failure just like it will in trading. You have to set realistic expectations so
you do not get discouraged easily and quit in any of these areas. You have to be satisfied that the results are worth your effort over the long term. You need to understand what to expect before you begin a marriage, a job, a business, or trading. (more…)

Control your emotions

control-emotionAllowing your confidence to be shaken can turn a simple losing streak into a terrible case of going bad. Keep your emotions in check. When you lose a pot or make a poor investment decision, get up, walk around the chair or take some deep breaths. Don’t lose your poise. If a trade, or if poker hand does not work out, walk away from the position/hand. Be confident enough about your ability to win afterwards.

Uncertainty in Trading

You just have to deal with it. But there are times where your conviction levels go through the roof. You know damned well that should should be trading. You are comfortable with what you see. Are you taking action?
 
There are other times where your
conviction level is low, or not there at all. There is a split second cue in the back of your brain that says “I don’t know what is going on here”. Are you listening to it and backing off? Or are you letting your conscious mind, emotions/greed etc. take over?
The probability for a successful outcome shares a positive correlation with what level your ‘conviction meter’ is. If its high, your chances of a successful outcome increase. If low, you can imagine just as poor of a result.
Listen to your level of conviction. If it is strong, act upon it. If weak or in question, don’t do anything at all. Typically, you have a short window of opportunity to decide where you stand. Take advantage of it.
