US will test vaccines on more than 100,000 people starting in July – report

Reuters report on the vaccine trial

Reuters report on the vaccine trial
The US plans a massive round of phase 2 vaccine trials in an effort to speed up the timeline for vaccine development to have a mass candidate ready by year-end.
Companies that pass phase one trials, including Oxford and Moderna, will shift to massive phase two trials rather than the small trials that are typical. Each of the vaccine candidates will enroll 20,000-30,000 candidates for a second phase starting in July and centered on workers and places where the likelihood of exposure is high. Many will get a placebo to compare data.
The data will then be shared among the +5 companies that will take part.
A risk among the test subjects is something called ‘disease enhancement’ which causes a vaccine to make the disease worse — something that’s happened in animal trials for vaccines for relatives of COVID-19.
“If all the cards fall into the right place and all the stars are aligned, you definitely could get a vaccine by December or January,” Dr Fauci said.

Moderna reports ‘positive data’ on early-stage coronavirus vaccine trial

Just about everyone is making vaccine progress these days

It is tough to try and make sense of the developments of a coronavirus vaccine when we are trading on whatever the companies are telling us, rather than the science of it. But hey, that’s what happens when you don’t have that medical/biotech background.
In a statement today, Moderna is saying that it has had ‘positive data’ from its early-stage human trial for a coronavirus vaccine. Shares are jumping by more than 10% in pre-market as the company reports on their progress and this is also lifting general sentiment.
According to reports, the vaccine helped to produce coronavirus antibodies in all 45 participants of the trial. From a report by CNBC:

Gilead

Gilead arguably has the best science in the business. But success in Biotech / Pharma is reserved for those who keep their customers alive, but milk them forever by not curing them of anything.

Hits against Gilead:

1. Gilead did not make any friends by creating the Gardasil vaccine for HPV, which killed the downstream pipeline for those companies that would have treated HPV for 40-50 years.

2. Gilead does not have deep hooks inside the FDA either

Regeneron on the other hand has deep contacts inside the FDA and also practices the milking-forever business model. If they package dried-prunes as a cure for Covid, FDA will merrily approve it.

Bill Gates donates $10 billion for vaccine research

bill-gates-1983Gates may be great with computers and technologies, but he’ll just waste money putting it into vaccines.  Best to spend it on sanitation, nutrition and refrigeration if he wants to help the most people of poor countries, because these three things were the major reasons why we had a dramatic decline in infectious diseases in America. DAVOS, Switzerland (Jan. 29) — The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $10 billion over the next decade to research new vaccines and bring them to the world’s poorest countries, the Microsoft co-founder and his wife said Friday.

Calling upon governments and business to also contribute, they said the money will produce higher immunization rates and aims to make sure that 90 percent of children are immunized against dangerous diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia in poorer nations.

“We must make this the decade of vaccines,” Bill Gates said in a statement. “Vaccines already save and improve millions of lives in developing countries. Innovation will make it possible to save more children than ever before.”

Gates said the commitment more than doubles the $4.5 billion the foundation has given to vaccine research over the years.

The foundation said up to 7.6 million children under 5 could be saved through 2019 as a result of the donation. It also estimates that an additional 1.1 million kids would be saved if a malaria vaccine can be introduced by 2014. A tuberculosis vaccine would prevent even more deaths.

“Vaccines are a miracle,” said Melinda Gates. “With just a few doses, they can prevent deadly diseases for a lifetime.”

Margaret Chan, head of the World Health Organization, called the Gates contribution unprecedented and urged governments and private donors to add to the initiative.

“An additional two million deaths in children under five years could be prevented by 2015 through widespread use of new vaccines and a 10 percent increase in global vaccination coverage,” said Chan.

The Gates statement said the foundation would help to dramatically reduce child mortality in the next 10 years and urged others to pitch in with research funding and other financial support for poor children….
