Major US stock indices rocket higher into the close

Indices all close with gains of over 7%

The major US stock indices rocketed higher into the close.  Reports that another $1.5 trillion of stimulus was leaked to Wall Street executives may have been a catalyst. The major indices are closing with oversized gains with the S&P bringing up the rear with a impressive 7.03% rise
The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index up 175.03 points or 7.03% to 2663.68
  • NASDAQ index rose 540.15 points or 7.33% to 7913.23
  • Dow rose 1627.46 points or 7.73% to 2679.99

All 30 Dow stocks rose on the day led by:

  • Boeing +19.26%
  • Raytheon Technologies, +15.28%
  • American Express, +13.91%
  • Visa, +11.46%
  • DuPont, +11.0%
  • McDonald’s, +10.4%
The laggards in the Dow 30 include:
  • Procter & Gamble, +2.25%
  • Pfizer, +2.62%
  • Exxon Mobil, +3.09%
  • Verizon, +3.25%
  • Johnson & Johnson, +4.03%

US stocks close higher but well off highs in volatile trading

Nasdaq was down -1.88% at the lows, and up 5.03% at the high today

The US stock indices are closing higher on the day but off the highs for the day. I guess you can say there well off the lows for the day too.  The NASDAQ index was down -1.8% at the lows, and up 5.03% the highs. It closed up 2.3%. The volatility is red hot.

The final numbers are showing:
  • The S&P index rose 11.29 points or 0.47% to 2409.39. The low price was at 2319.78, down -3.27% at the time. The high was at 2466.97, up 2.87% at the peak.
  • The Nasdaq index rose  160.73 points or 2.3% to 7150.57.
  • The Dow rose 188.27 points or 0.95% to 20087.19. The low price was at 19177.13, or down -3.63%. The high reached 20442.63, or up 2.73%.

The Vix, often called the fear index has moved up to 38.5. That surpasses the 36.2 high from December 2018.  That’s the highest level since February 2018. The highest volatility index going back to 2015 moved up to 50.3 and 2018 and 53.29 and 2015.

The major European stock indices are closing the day in the red, erasing earlier gains.
The provisional closes are showing:
  • German DAX, -0.3%. It was up about 0.60% the highs
  • France’s CAC, -0.6%. It reached the high of +0.40%
  • UK’s FTSE, -0.6%. It peaked at +0.36%
  • Spain’s Ibex, -0.4%. It was up around 0.22% at the highs
  • Italy’s FTSE MIB -0.6%.  It rose by 0.29% at session highs
In the European debt market, the benchmark yields are mostly lower. France 10 year notes move back below the 0.0% level and is trading at -0.007% currently (low yield reach -0.019%).

Stock indices end lower. All S&P sectors close lower on the day

Late day selling hurts major indices

Some late day selling has pushed the major indices into the red.  All the S&P sectors are closing lower on the day.
The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index -9.13 points or -0.28% to 3237.15. The high reached 3244.91.The low extended to 3232.43
  • NASDAQ index fell -2.883 points or -0.03% to 9068.58. The high reached 9091.93. The low extended to 9042.55
  • Dow fell -119.97 points or -0.42% to 28583.43. The high reached 28685.50. The low extended to 28565.28.

The S&P and Dow off highs but still close at record highs

The major stock indices closed off their high levels for the day as US/China trade deal details go back and forth.  However, they S&P and Dow still closed at record levels. The NASDAQ was higher but still off its record close level.

After the close, Disney EPS came in higher than expectations at $1.07 versus $0.95 estimate. The revenues came in at $19.10 billion versus $19.04 billion estimate.  Is the stock is trading at $136.00 after closing at $133.12.
