S&P and Dow close at session lows

NASDAQ are on the day but off the session highs

the S&P index and Dow industrial average are both closing at/near session lows. The NASDAQ index remained higher on the day but well off its high levels.
The final numbers are showing
  • S&P index -20.02 points or -0.70% at 2848.42. The high percentage was 0.79%
  • NASDAQ index +45.266 points or +0.51% at 8854.38. The high percentage was 1.41%.
  • Dow industrial average -218.45 points or -0.91% at 23664.64.  The high percentage was up 0.72%.

Dow was down -362 points at the low

The major indices are closing higher and near session highs. Hopes for a successful reopening of America is helping the indices move higher today. Earlier in the session, the indices were down as concerned about the reigniting of US China trade tensions on the back of the Trump administration putting the blame of the coronavirus to China over the weekend.
Time heals all wounds in US stocks (or so it seems), and the NASDAQ was the 1st index to turn positive, followed by the S&P and finally the Dow industrial average. Disney and Boeing were the earlier drags on the Dow. Disney trading as low as $100.55. It is closing at $103.26 down -2.14%. Boeing traded as low as $124.35. It is closing at $131.38, down -2%.

  • The S&P index +12.03 points or 0.43% at 2842.74. The S&P index traded as low as -1.16%.
  • The NASDAQ index rose 105.76 points or 1.23% 8710.71. The NASDAQ index traded as low as -0.78%.
  • The Dow industrial average rose 26.07 points or 0.11% at 23749.76. The Dow industrial average traded as low as -1.53%.

Netflix shares are higher after the close after subscriber numbers surged 15.8M vs est of 8.47M
The 1Q revenues came in at $5.77B vs $5.76B estimate.  EPS came in at $1.57. They see 2Q rising to $1.81.

Dow lags as Boeing slumps

The US stock indices closed higher on the day led by the Nasdaq index. The S&P  and Dow closed higher as well but the gains were well behind the tech heavy Nasdaq. For the Dow, the blame fall firmly on Boeing which alone fell over 7% on the day.

  • S&P index rose 16.19 points or 0.58% at 2799.55
  • Nasdaq index rose 139.18 points or 1.66% at 8532.36
  • Dow rose 33.33 points or 0.14% at 23537.68

NASDAQ index closes above its 50 and 200 day moving averages

NASDAQ up for the 4th day in a row

The NASDAQ index is the star performer today, rising for the 4th day in a row closing above its 50 day and 200 day moving averages. The close above the 200 day moving averages the 1st since March 6.  The other indices also had solid days today with the S&P and Dow closing at the highest level since March 10.

Indices all close with gains of over 7%

The major US stock indices rocketed higher into the close.  Reports that another $1.5 trillion of stimulus was leaked to Wall Street executives may have been a catalyst. The major indices are closing with oversized gains with the S&P bringing up the rear with a impressive 7.03% rise

  • NASDAQ index rose 540.15 points or 7.33% to 7913.23
  • Dow rose 1627.46 points or 7.73% to 2679.99

Broad indices move up over 3% on the day

The US stocks moved up to a new session high but backed off just a bit into the close.  It was still a solid day higher.
The major indices are closing at:
  • S&P index rose 5.02 points or 3.35% to 2626.49.
  • Nasdaq index rose 271.77 points or 3.62% tp 7774.15.
  • Dow industrial average rose 688.32 points or 3.18% to 22325.10.
Although the price extended to new session highs in the major indices during the last hour, the volatility was a bit less than recent history. The snapshot at 3 PM showed:
  • S&P index up 70.44 points or 2.77% at 2611.91. The index moved up to a high of 2631.80 in the last hour.
  • NASDAQ index +225.28 points or 3.0% at 7727.66. The index moved up to a high of 7784.34 in the last hour
  • Dow up 526.39 points or 2.43% at 22163.12. The index moved up to a high of 22378.09 in the last hour.
