The US economic recovery – V, W or Nike shaped?

The shape of the US economic recovery ahead is much discussed, will it be L, V, U, or W shaped? Seriously, this is a debate!

Now there is a new contender – the Nike Swoosh shaped recovery. This is probably a read for the weekend with a glass of something (really strong most likely) in hand:
  • the recovery could be shaped more like a Nike swoosh. The bottoming out process may take a little longer to take hold, but once the rebound starts it would be steady and gradual.
Piece is here if you’d like more.
Why not ASICS shaped instead?

12 Wisdom Points for Traders

1. Now the successful trader prepares before he enters battle.  The unsuccessful trader makes but a few, if any, preparations before he enters battle.  Proper preparation leads to victory; a little preparation leads to defeat; and no preparation leads to ultimate destruction!  The one who is properly prepared is the one who is most likely to win.

2. In trading, let your great object be a quick and decisive victory, not the slow death of a lengthy loss.

3.  If you know who the enemy is and you know yourself, you will never fear the next trade.  If you know yourself but not the enemy, you will win one lose one.  If you do not know the enemy or yourself, you will lose on each trade.

4.  The quality of entry is like a well-timed swoop of a falcon which enables it to strike and destroy its victim.

5.  Proper preparation may be likened to the bending of a crossbow; decision, to the releasing of the trigger.

6.  Just as water retains no constant shape, so in trading know the market is constantly changing.

7.  Ponder and deliberate before you enter a trade. (more…)

Different shapes and forms.

Failure comes in all different shapes and forms.  The distance you fall after a failure,  time it took to get to the failure, and whether you get back up determines that shape and form.   I realize there are a million posts on why failure is important but success is important, especially in trading.

Failure is different in trading.

Failure/losing in trading is not the same as failure in other contexts.  What is working right now is always changing. What happens to many traders is that they waste money until their system is working again or they run out of money before it happens.  I believe in having a process so you can adapt to that change.  When you find something that works continue to do it till it does not work.  A 100x easier said than done.

U.S., U.K. 'most stretched' by debt, Moody's says

Uncle Sam isn’t in danger of losing his top credit rating, but he’s not in the greatest shape, either.

So says Moody’s Investors Service in its quarterly assessment of triple-A-rated countries.

Paying the interest on their debt remains manageable for these countries, Moody’s says, so their governments aren’t in any immediate danger of a downgrade.

But among the AAA countries, the U.S. and the U.K. are “most stretched” by their debt obligations, Moody’s says.

The debt ratings are important because a downgrade raises a country’s borrowing costs. And virtually every big country faces a difficult challenge in removing bailout and stimulus money quickly enough to avoid inflation and slowly enough to keep the weak recovery going.

“This exposes governments to substantial execution risk in the implementation of their exit strategies, which could yet make their credit more vulnerable,” says Arnaud Mares, senior vice president in Moody’s sovereign risk group and the main author of the report.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ—Citing a need to provide quality programming 24 hours a day, CNBC has extended an invitation to anyone who owns a suit to drop by the financial news network and be a guest expert, cohost a show with Larry Kudlow, or do whatever. “Don’t worry about what kind of shape your suit is in,” said CNBC president Mark Hoffman, who explained that his network’s studio has an iron and some old phone books that people can press their jackets on. Einstein's Brain Holds Secrets Of His Extreme Intelligence

A new analysis of photographs of Albert Einstein’s brain has revealed special features that could be what gave him his amazing smarts.

The researchers compared 14 pictures of Einstein’s brain to 85 brain scans from “normal” people.”Although the overall size and asymmetrical shape of Einstein’s brain were normal, the prefrontal, somatosensory, primary motor, parietal, temporal and occipital cortices were extraordinary,” study researcher Dean, of Florida State University said in a statement. “These may have provided the neurological underpinnings for some of his visuospatial and mathematical abilities, for instance.”

Falk’s findings were published today Nov 16 in the journal Brain. Here are some of the images: (more…)

Fear and Greed

Day trading is a system based on rules, but as charts are analyzed and prices fluctuate, traders may find that they have a difficult time sticking to those rules when fear or greed become involved in the analysis. Successful traders are able to buy despite feelings of fear and sell despite feelings of wanting to prolong the holding of a stock.

A confident trader will still take the time to test and re-test a stock. At first glance a stock might look like it’s in top shape and performing as expected, but a successful trader will not solely rely on first glance appearances. Those who day trade stocks know that in an instant the market can change and it’s important to stay abreast of company information as well as market news and conditions. A successful trader will stick to the rules set up in day trading systems to ensure that his or her reactions remain unbiased throughout the trade.

Effective day trading strategies focus on providing consistent and disciplined actions. Successful traders have a consistent approach to the market and trading. They will take the time to systematically build up their own trading system that takes into account their own personal elements of risk control and they will take the time to stick to their original trading plan. It’s not that traders shouldn’t make changes based on market information, but that the changes made should be based on established trading rules that help traders determine what their entry and exit points on a trade should be.

Some of the best day trading tips that a trader can get help them deal with fear and greed. Many traders find that they may be able to memorize the rules and familiarize themselves with knowing how to accurately interpret stock charts, but they also need to learn how to prepare themselves to deal with fear and greed.

Fear in trading primarily takes on two basic forms – the fear of loss and the fear of missing out. The fear of loss leads to selling stocks prematurely and as a result, they aren’t able to capitalize and recover fully on the trade. When they start to enter into trades, the trade isn’t given enough time to mature and the trader sells so that more isn’t risked.

The fear of missing out is another form of fear that compels people to abandon their rules so that they don’t lose out on another major stock move. These fears need to be dealt with because they will impact a trader’s entry and exit decisions.

Greed is the motivation for over-confidence. Dreams of “making it big” in trading can cloud a trader’s perspective. Again, they abandon the rules of their trading system in the hopes that more money will come their way. Traders need to learn how to deal with greed so they can maintain their focus and not have their thoughts be swept away with illusions.

Trading Nuggets

  • Remember that becoming a profitable trader is a journey, not just a destination. The perfect trader does not yet exist. Try to become a better trader each day and enjoy the progress you make. Concentrate on learning the craft of technical analysis and on improving your trading skills, rather than focusing solely on the amount of profit or losses in your trading.
  • Congratulate yourself and feel good about a trade when you have done what you were supposed to do, according to your trading plan–regardless of the profit or loss on the trade.
  • Don’t get overly excited about the winning trades or too depressed about the losing trades. Try to maintain an even keel and a professional outlook regarding your trading.
  • Do not expect certainty in a trade. You are looking for a preponderance of evidence, not proof beyond the shadow of a doubt.
  • The pain of standing aside and missing a good trade that your method told you to take is much worse than the pain of losing on a trade that you entered and exited properly and according to your trading plan. (more…)
