NASDAQ snaps a five day losing streak

Dow up over 700 points at the session highs

The major US indices close sharply higher on the first day of the new trading month/new trading quarter with the NASDAQ index snapping a five day losing streak.

Shares of Merck surged 8.6% on the back of a Covid drug that cuts hospitalizations by 50%. Transportation stocks like United airlines, Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines are also higher on the back of that news. Energy was the best performing sector as oil prices move back to the upside.

Solid gains for stocks as investors cheer FDA approval of Pfizer Covid vaccination

S&P and NASDAQ close at record levels

The US major indices had a solid gains today led by the NASDAQ index which increased 1.54%. The Russell 2000 also had a solid gain of near 1.9%.

The gains were help by the FDA’s full approval of the Pfizer Covid vaccination. The hope is that those who have remained unvaccinated will be encouraged to get vaccinated now, and also that businesses and local governments, etc. will start to force workers to get the approved Pfizer vaccination.

Disney boosts Dow into positive territory. The NASDAQ and S&P close lower

The shares of Disney rose by over 13% and boosted the Dow up by over hundred points alone. That was enough to lift the Dow to a near 50 point gain on the day. However, all the major indices had declines for the week with the S&P leading the way to the downside.

Although Doordash and Airbnb make the list of some of the big losers today, their IPOs this week were nothing short of spectacular.
Doordash was priced at $102 and is ending the week at $178.84, while Airbnb was priced at $68 a share and is closing at $139.03.
With all the IPOs being smash before the end of the year, Wall Street is reaping huge rewards. There is no recession there. Meanwhile, there is still no progress on Covid relief today.
