An Hour With Arnold Palmer

“It is deceptively simple, endlessly complicated, a child can play it well, and a grown man can never master it. Any single round of it is full of unexpected triumphs and perfect shots that end in disaster. It is almost a science, yet it is a puzzle without an answer. It is gratifying and tantalizing, precise and unpredictable. It requires complete concentration and total relaxation. It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time, rewarding and maddening and it is without doubt, the greatest game mankind has ever invented.” – Arnold Palmer

What a wonderful quote about the game of golf. Although to a lesser extent, the same things can be said about trading as anyone who trades every day in the trenches will tell you.

I was reminded about this perspective this weekend when watching an hour interview Charlie Rose recently conducted with Mr. Palmer. Many people don’t know this, but it was an biography of Arnold Palmer that I read as a child which originally sparked my interest in taking up the game. So, all of these years of both frustration and incredible enjoyment, I owe directly to Mr. Palmer.

Now in the twilight of his years, I found this recent interview really enjoyable particularly after the 30 minute mark. If you have an opportunity to watch this, I thinkhis advice about developing a system is so very important especially for new traders and investors as well as what the discussion after that about what it takes to win. Much like the quote above, the perspectives are priceless. Even if you don’t play golf or even hate the game, don’t miss this interview!

* A trader views the market as a dangerous minefield;

* A trader looks at the market as a video game.

How do these metaphors affect our trading? Our emotional responses to trading?
How would being aware of our metaphors–and shifting them–change how we trade
and how we experience our trading?

This story is my favorite metaphor for the Stock Market.

I wonder what it says about my perception? Personally, I favor the puzzle to be  solved approach.

“Once upon a time, in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and, as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy at $20 for a monkey.

This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each, and the supply of monkeys became so small that it was an effort to even find a monkey, let alone catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. ‘Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35, and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.’

The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys. They never saw the man nor his assistant again, only monkeys everywhere!

Trick for Traders

I developed a little trick that might seem trivial, but it is very important. Simply put, anytime to you put a trade on, assume that the trade is going to be a loser. No matter how much analysis, how many supporting factors, or how perfect the pattern is, assume that the trade will lose money. This creates a profound shift in your focus because, rather than searching for and possibly discounting contradictory evidence (which can sometimes be as simple as “I just bought and now it’s going down…”), you will be open to and will readily accept contradicting information. Of course you will, because you assumed the trade was wrong to begin with. When you find confirmation for the trade, it is almost a pleasant surprise. Shift your thinking into this mode, and you will be much less likely to overstay your welcome in suboptimal setups that are not working out–you’ll be far more likely to do the right thing, which is usually to pull the plug on the trade (time stop) and look for a better opportunity.

Now, there’s another piece to this puzzle. A lot of writers focus a lot of attention on confidence in trading, and this is important, but it is a different kind of confidence. You must have confidence in your method and know that a profit is virtually assured over a large enough set of trades, and be able to separate this knowledge from the outcome of any one trade which is, more or less, a coin flip.

Beating The Game

3575My satisfaction always came from beating the market, solving the puzzle. The money was the reward, but it was not the main reason I loved the market. The stock market is the greatest, most complex puzzle ever invented – and it pays the biggest jackpot….it was never the money that drove me. It was the game, solving the puzzle, beating the market that had confused and confounded the greatest minds in history. I set protective stops at the same time I enter a trade. I normally move these stops in to lock in a profit as the trend continues. (more…)
