10 Trading Rules

  1. Always wait for the setup: no setup – no trade. Agree. If your strategy doesn’t provide you a good risk/reward trade to make, then your job is to be patient until it does. Ironically, this often requires you to sit out some very good moves in the market and be inactive at the very same times you want to be aggressive.

  2. The best trades work almost right away. Agree, but with one important caveat – this rule greatly depends upon your strategy. Some strategies will require greater patience than others. If trading short-term, this rule is almost always correct, but if your time frames are longer, then you also have time on your side which requires more patience but that patience can pay off if your analysis is correct.
  3. Never take a big loss. If it doesn’t ‘feel’ right. Remove it! Disagree. Sometimes you have to take a big loss to prevent the risk of an even greater loss. Refusing to take a big loss when a mistake has been made can be very costly. I also disagree with the view that “If it doesn’t feel right, remove it.” Actually, some of the best trades you will ever make in your career are those trades that feel wrong and about as far from “right” as you can make it. Don’t believe me? Think over the last month or so about the trades you missed because they didn’t feel right but your strategy told you to hold or buy them anyway! It is also interesting to me that this rule says to trade by feel and at the same time advises in another rule not to trade by emotion. You can’t do one without the other!
  4. Always perfect your craft and sharpen your skills – good traders are constantly learning. Agree. No matter how skilled, intelligent, and successful you have been, there is always room for improvement. Moreover, because of the ever-growing changing nature of the market, what you do now to trade successfully won’t always work in every situation and the next market environment. Only experience and constant dedication to your job will provide you with the weapons for enduring market success.
  5. Be patient with winning trades – impatient with trades that fight back. Agree. Another good ways of saying – let your winners run and cut your losers short. The truth is that most individual traders and investors do the exact opposite – they sell winners too quickly and they hold losers far too long letting trades that went awry become long-term “trapped” investments. Trade Like Michael Jordan

How does basketball exactly relate to golf and perhaps trading successfully? Well, you’re going to soon find out!

In this article, Michael provides 10 rules for maximizing competitiveness and if you’ve been trading for any period of time, you’ll instantly recognize their value to trading successfully. In fact, here’s my personal take on how Jordan’s rules directly relate to making us all better traders:

  • Focus on the little things.  It is true, if you focus on the little things (finding and exploiting attractive entry points, proper position sizing, sticking to stop loss levels, unbiased chart analysis, etc.) they’ll all add up to contribute to your big picture success and bottom line. When the pressure is on and tension and stress is high, traders must rely on the basic skills they’ve developed through constant practice to make the tough trades. That practice and constant dedication to improve oneself will make a world of difference when opportunities are the most plentiful.

  • Have total confidence in what you can do.  As Michael says “If you have 100 percent confidence that you can pull off a shot, most of the time you will.” I couldn’t agree more. While we all make trades based on imperfect information and conflicting data, at all times we must be 100% confident in the trades we make. There’s a good reason why so many traders say you must always “trade to win” instead of “trading not to lose.” There’s a huge difference. In addition, the only way to have confidence you really need in the trades you make is to actually do the work the leads up to making those trades in the first place.

  • Don’t think about the prize; think about the work.  Novice traders focus on how much money they stand to gain or lose from trading while great traders focus simply on the process of trading well and to their best of their ability. That’s a key difference. Sometimes a good trader will be very unhappy even if they make money in a particular trade because they didn’t trade it well or the trade violated their strategy and they got away with it whereas a novice trader will simply focus on the profits or losses no matter how and why they earned them. Money, and the rewards the flow from successful trading, are a low priority to the successful trader – instead trading well and trading even better the next time are the two top priorities. (more…)

Skill versus Hard work

stock-traderIs trading success dependent on innate skills? Or is hard work suffi-cient? There is no question in my mind that many of the supertraders have a special talent for trading. Marathon running provides an appro-priate analogy. Virtually anyone can run a marathon, given sufficient commitment and hard work. Yet, regardless of the effort and desire, only a small fraction of the population will ever be able to run a 2:12 marathon. Similarly, anyone can learn to play a musical instrument. But again, regardless of work and dedication, only a handful of individuals possess the natural talent to become concert soloists. The general rule is that exceptional performance requires both natural talent and hard work to realize its potential. If the innate skill is lacking, hard work may pro-vide proficiency, but not excellence.
In my opinion, the same principles apply to trading. Virtually any-one can become a net profitable trader, but only a few have the inborn talent to become supertraders. For this reason, it may be possible to teach trading success, but only up to a point. Be realistic in your goals.

Day Trading is like Monopoly

I know a lot of traders who are just eeking by or breaking even at the end of the month. Many of these traders ask what they could be doing better or what my “secret” is.Monopoly. You buy 4 houses and sell them to buy a hotel. In other words, you find a simple, routine, monotonous way of trading and you just do it over and over. Most of the guys I talk to have a trading strategy, most of them have tested it. What they don’t have is the confidence to just stick with it. Trading shouldn’t be a roller coaster, but rather it should be routine like filling out TPS reports.Mental Toughness by Daniel Teitelbaum. In his book he states that you need to break down the walls that are stopping you from reaching success. He has you work on several mental exercises to help you focus on what you need to do. After all, if you knew that you had to take that GOOG trade this morning or your family would die you’d be plenty motivated to take the trade and to do it right.

I think the main reason that most traders can’t stick with it is that they haven’t got enough mental focus. They get tired and sleep in past market open, or they become unsure of themselves so they fail to initalize the first trade of the day when the setup is right in front of them, or they rationalize that some piece of news or the other will do such and such to the market. All of these rationalizations are subconscious disruptions coming to the surface.

The Success Of Warren Buffett

Singular focus – Since Warren Buffett was a young boy, he had almost a singular focus to accumulate wealth. He also believed his way to wealth would be through the stock market. At a very early age, he knew what he wanted and where he wanted to go. Successful people always have long-term visions of their life. This is a lesson especially for younger folks. You will only really succeed in life once you know what you want to accomplish. As Yogi Berra said, “If you don’t know where you are going, you may end up some place else.”

Dedication – Mr. Buffett spends about 18 hours every day dedicated to investing capital. This is the type of dedication needed to succeed at his level. I doubt he wastes anytime in front of the television or shopping at the mall. Almost all his time is spent thinking and working on Berkshire Hathaway. This type of dedication can have its drawbacks as well. The book does not portray his family life in a very positive manner. He was separated from his first wife (it appears they did not divorce for P.R. reasons) and did not spend much time with his children as they grew up. There is only so much time in a day, and he spent it mostly on business-related activities.

Independent thinking – Buffett has come up with his criteria for investing in companies. These criteria have been developed over years of studying and reading about his craft. He will only invest in companies that meet these criteria. He does not feel pressured when things do not go his way nor when outside sources suggest new rules for investing. The most telling story of this was back in 1999 during the “technology stock bubble”. Many people were saying he was too old and out of touch. They said he did not understand the “new economy”. Buffett continued to plot his course using the rules he knew and understood. He has been vindicated as the technology market crashed and Berkshire Hathaway has continued to thrive.

Alliances – Mr. Buffett has developed partners and allies to help him attain his goals. He uses these partners to manage his businesses, help find new investments, and to obtain access to capital. Mr. Buffett will be the first to tell you that his wealth would be a small fraction of what it is today without these business associates. (more…)

Chapter 2: Hard Work

I am sure that the theme of this chapter comes as no surprise to you. We all know, (or at least most of us do) that to get anywhere in this life, no matter what your field may be, it is going to require some hard work along the way. There can’t be a harvest if you haven’t worked in the fields. And no where is this concept of hard work more evident than in the professional traders I have come to know over the years.

What is striking to me about this group of super-traders, the Market Wizards, is how almost every single one of them is a genuine workaholic. For these people, the level of commitment and dedication to trading is absolutely amazing, and it has engendered in them a performance level so intense and so consistent, it almost boggles the mind. When you look at these individuals, you find the kind of hard work that is almost inconceivable for most people to maintain even for one day, never mind as a lifestyle. But it is this difference in personality and commitment that makes the Market Wizards who they are, and accounts for much of their high levels of achievement.

In order for you to get a real sense of the kind of hard work we are talking about here, I think I should describe for you a couple of individuals and how they work. This will give you a good idea as to how intensely passionate they are about their pursuits.

main_teresaThe markets are nothing more than a reflection of cumulative sum of human reactions to financial data inflow. As a trader, you are part of it, and millions like you create that entity that appears to be moving so intelligently in all time frames.
So how it is possible that you and millions like you can create the greatest illusionist, the market, and ironically fight against it in every moment of your trading life.
In other words, the market becomes the ultimate enemy of yours and you fight it all the time? As an unit reflection of the market’s image, can you defeat yourself?
Your fight can only be as good as your best, but you create your enemy with your best as well.
