FT says Trump’s back is to the wall – likely to play “even dirtier than normal” in the debate

An opinion piece in the Financial Times that gives a heads up for a fiery debate with Biden.

  • Trump’s back is to the wall
  • his taxes … it does increase the likelihood that Cyrus Vance, the New York District Attorney, will bring a criminal prosecution for tax fraud
  • being president gives Mr Trump personal immunity and shields him from his lenders
  • incentive to stay in office is pretty much existential. I don’t believe this has been true of any other president in US history. All of which means he’s likely to play even dirtier than normal in tonight’s debate, which is saying something

War breaks out between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Old conflict explodes

map of armenia-azerbaijan
Armenia Prime Minister Nikol Pashiyan declared martial law and a general mobilization after accusing Azerbaijan of “pre-planned aggression.”
The region of Nagorno-Karahakh along with some nearby districts are formally part of Azerbaijan but there have been frequent clashes since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, including one that killed hundreds in 2016.
At this moment, this is a non-event from markets but if Russia or Turkey were to get involved that could change quickly.
Putin expressed “serious concern” and called for a halt to hostilities. Turkey’s Erdogan said it “stand by its Azeri brothers with all its means.” Azeri is a term for Turkic Azerbaijani people.
There have been periodic attacks that recently escalated into what’s now close to full-scale warfare. The Azeri army is using tanks, artillery, missiles and aircraft against Armenian positions.

China says will take ‘necessary response’ to new US restrictions on Chinese diplomats

Comments by the Chinese foreign ministry

  • New US restrictions are illegal, not legitimate
They are alluding to this movement restriction imposed by the US on Chinese diplomats in the country. If anything else, the escalation in tensions continue to be rather gradual and as mentioned before, the trade deal – or at least the facade of it – is what matters most for the market and both sides aren’t willing to risk that for the time being.

Japan press – “Abenomics here to stay”

Justin had the news on Friday of the imminent retirement of Japanese Prime Minister Abe.

  • the end of an era for Japanese politics
Abe will not be taking Abenomics with him though, Japan Times:
  • economists say Japan’s next leader will likely maintain he basic Abenomics framework
  • “For sure, markets will be watching the continuity. I think many are assuming that things won’t change a lot, but the new prime minister will need to clearly explain that,” said Daiju Aoki, chief investment officer at UBS Wealth Management Japan.
Shunsuke Kobayashi, chief economist at Mizuho Securities:
  • “The government will need to continue to deal with the pandemic and do what’s necessary to contain it while limiting the economic damage … whoever becomes the prime minister, he or she will have to face the same issue and take the same necessary steps”
ps. Much of Abenomics boiled down to massive policy easing from the BOJ. This is not gonna change any time soon.
Abe was PM from 2006 to 2007 and then again since 2012. He will step down on or around September 15.  He is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history. Get well soon, and enjoy your retirement sir!

The EU has warned Boris Johnson he has less than two weeks to save post-Brexit trade and security talks

The UK Times with the worrying news, citing senior European Union sources.

  • The UK PM has been warned he has less than two weeks to save post-Brexit trade and security talks
  • Michel Barnier and David Frost, the UK’s chief negotiator, will hold emergency talks next week in an effort to save the negotiations, The Times understands.
  • Mr Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator, told the government last week that negotiations will not move forward until Mr Frost explains what Britain’s future policy will be on industrial subsidies.
  • In an angry response, the prime minister’s negotiator hit back, telling the French former European commissioner that Britain would not draw up such a key economic policy on a “timetable dictated to” by the EU.
Times may be gated.
The UK voted to leave what, more than 4 years ago? And Frost is whining about the timetable being dictated. What, no one could have seen this coming … ?
