US Indices run higher into the close. Major indices close near session highs

Major indice rise by 1.6% to 2.2%

The US stocks ran higher into the close with the major indices rising about 0.9% more in the last hour of trading.
The final numbers are showing:
  • The S&P index rose 56.09 points or 2.28% at 2526.90
  • The NASDAQ index rose 126.73 points or 1.72% at 2487.31
  • The Dow Industrial Average rose 1 and 69.93 points or 2.24% at 21413.44
Going into the last hour of trading, the major indices were trading at:
  • S&P index up 32.81 points or 1.33% at 2503.31. The final hour added 0.95%
  • Nasdaq index up 54.859 points or 0.75% 7415.44.  The final hour added 0.97%
  • Dow up 275.64 points or 1.32% at 21219.15. The final hour added 0.92%

Broad indices move up over 3% on the day

The US stocks moved up to a new session high but backed off just a bit into the close.  It was still a solid day higher.
The major indices are closing at:
  • S&P index rose 5.02 points or 3.35% to 2626.49.
  • Nasdaq index rose 271.77 points or 3.62% tp 7774.15.
  • Dow industrial average rose 688.32 points or 3.18% to 22325.10.
Although the price extended to new session highs in the major indices during the last hour, the volatility was a bit less than recent history. The snapshot at 3 PM showed:
  • S&P index up 70.44 points or 2.77% at 2611.91. The index moved up to a high of 2631.80 in the last hour.
  • NASDAQ index +225.28 points or 3.0% at 7727.66. The index moved up to a high of 7784.34 in the last hour
  • Dow up 526.39 points or 2.43% at 22163.12. The index moved up to a high of 22378.09 in the last hour.

Major indices end the day with solid gains and at the highs

The Dow and S&P rises for the 3rd day in around.

Yesterday both the S&P index and the Dow closed higher for the 2nd day in a row. The NASDAQ did not join them as it fell in trading yesterday. However all 3 indices are closing higher in trading today with solid gains. The indices closed near/at the session highs.

The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index rose 151.74 points or 6.13% at 2627.30
  • NASDAQ index rose 413.24 points or 5.6% at 7797.53
  • Dow industrial average rose 1351.62 points or 6.38% at 22552.17.
The final hour of trading – which has been very volatile of late – once again saw the major indices rock ‘n’ roll ‘n:
  • S&P index, was at 2594.44 at 3 PM ET. The high in the last hour reached 2637.01. The low reached 2574.92. That is a range of 63 points.
  • NASDAQ index was trading at 7686.41 at 3 PM. The high in the last hour reached 7809.82. The low extended to 7639.95. That is a range of 170 points.
  • Dow industrial average was trading at 22227.47 at 3 PM. The high in the last hour reached 22595. The low reached 21964.24. That is a range of 631 points in the last hour.

The indices are also closing well off there lows for the day (the major indices did not go negative today).  Looking at the % low, % high and % Close, the % lows for the indices reached:

  • S&P index, +1.02%
  • NASDAQ index, +1.06%
  • Dow industrial average, +1.07%
Of the lows from Monday:
  • The Nasdaq is up 17.77%
  • The S&P index is up 20.31%
  • The Dow is up 24.06%
Of course those gains are impressive, but understand the gains are off much lower levels. The major indices are still well off the highs for the year.

European shares end mostly lower. FTSE 100 does rise though

The major European indices are ending the session mostly lower. The the exception is the UK’s FTSE 100 which has moved up by 0.23% on the day.

In the European debt market, the benchmark 10 year yields are mostly lower (with the exception of the Portuguese 10 year note):
The European yields are lowerIn other markets as London/European traders look to exit for the day (and just ahead of the ceremonial signing of the US/China phase 1 trade deal):

  • Spot gold is up $4.25 or 0.28% at $1550.63
  • WTI crude oil futures are trading down $0.51 or -0.86% at $57.74
In the US stock market the major indices are higher and trading at record levels:
  • S&P index up 14.9 points or 0.46% at 3298.13 (high for the day). It is getting closer to the 3300 level
  • NASDAQ index is up 42.84 points or 0.46% at 9294.17. The high reached 9298.82 just short of the 9300 level
  • The Dow is up 168 points or 0.58% at 29108.24
In the US debt market, the yields are lower and the yield curve flatter again with the 2 – 10 year spread down to 22.44 basis points from 24.09 basis points at the close yesterday.

The major US stock indices are closing once again at record highs.  The down industrial average toyed with the idea of breaking the 29,000 level. The index moved above the 28,000 level on November November 15. The high price today reached 29,988.01 before backing off.

Major indices close higher but late selling sends indices lower on Baghdad bomb chatter

The major US indices are closing higher on the day. However some late day selling on Baghdad bomb chatter helped to push the indices off highs into the close.
Nevertheless the NASDAQ index is closing at a record level.
The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index up 15.88 points or 0.49% at 3253.06. The high price reached 3267.07. The low extended to 3236.67
  • NASDAQ index rose 60.66 points or 0.67% at 9129.24. The high price reached 9168.88. The low extended to 9059.38
  • Dow rose 161.45 points or 0.56% at 28745.20. The high price reached 28866.18. The low extended to 28522.51.

S&P, Nasdaq have best year since 2013

Nasdaq up over 35% on year

The US stock market is closed for the year, and oh what a year it was.
The S&P index and the NASDAQ index both had their best years since 2013. The NASDAQ index led the way for the year with a gain of 35.23%. The S&P index rose by 28.87%. The Dow industrial average was limited with a 22.33% gain. Boeing weighed on that index in 2019.
For the day, the major indices are closing near highs:
  • S&P index rose 9.41 points or 0.29% to 3230.70
  • NASDAQ index rose 26.611 points or 0.30% to 8972.60
  • Dow rose 76.1 points or 0.27% to 28538.24
Globally for the year, the Nasdaq index was the largest gainer (+35.23%) followed by the S&P index (+28.88%) and Italy’s FTSE MIB (up 28.28%).  The Shanghai composite index had a impressive 22.1% return.  France’s Cac and Germany’s DAX rose 26.37% and 25.48% respectively.
The worst performing index was the Portuguese PSI20 at 10.20% and Spain’s Ibex at 11.82%.  The UK FTSE, with all the upheaval and uncertainty from Brexit and the political upheaval, had a limited (relatively) gain of 12.10%.

The S&P and NASDAQ indices are closing at record levels. They also moved to all time record highs intraday.
The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index, +26.91 points or 0.86% to 3168.55. The new all time intraday high price reached 3176.28
  • NASDAQ index up 63.265 points or 0.73% to 8717.314. The new intraday all-time high price reached 8745.82
  • Dow up 220.62 points or 0.79% to 28131.92
