Intuition Discipline Confidence Risk

Intuition although seemingly spontaneous, apparently emotional, stems from a form of “information” that has become built-in from past experience. Discipline means choosing what to do unencumbered by the fear of making a mistake. Confidence means trusting our intuition that what we “see” is what we “know.” There’s no escaping to the external, to the objective, and no standing on the shaky ground of emotions. So the question becomes, How do we create within ourselves the heroic condition of confidence wherein risk is not danger but life?

Going back to the roots of what ‘risk’ is all about. As I suggested rereading Justin Mamis’ passage of ‘When to Sell’ yesterday, I did reread passages of ‘The Nature of Risk’ probably my all time favourite book which was also written by Justin Mamis. Here is a small excerpt. Enjoy!

The Artist and the Trader

Art is for the Artist. Words must be written, Songs must be sung. Visions must be seen. Not because they are valued; but because they are Ideas. The Artist understands that wealth, true wealth as opposed to simply being rich, stems from Ideas. Great Art is valued, if valued properly, because they express an Idea well. Not always because they express a grand idea.

There is the modern myth that the Artist must not be materialist or wealthy. Whereas the Trader, as an Artist, knows that all Artists are wealthy, but all are not rich. It would seem that a great Trader and the Artist share a similar soul.

For they both :

Take a loss. The modern myth largely stems from the Artist producing their best Ideas to bounce back from a loss. They both believe they can replace their losses with better Ideas.

Respect everyone. An Idea can come from anyone. Every trader has been on the wrong side of a trade against someone of much more limited means, brains and circumstances.

Generous souls. For if wealth comes from Ideas, Ideas can always flow. An Artist never will admit he is out of Ideas. Many only have one grand idea, but die thinking the next grand idea is around the corner.

There is never enough. If Ideas are wealth, Life is to be lived to its fullest. The trader that gives up simply to be rich and preserve their riches has given up on their Ideas. Like the Artist that has sold out, simply producing copies of his once great work. Their admitting that it was either great timing or luck; not skill and belief that their Ideas still matter.

Free souls. Comes from the empowerment of wealth coming from your thoughts.

Drawn to excess. Because Ideas are regenerative, its tempting to believe everything is. Like the young that are blind to time. Or the athlete that believes there is always another game, tomorrow.

Be Unemotional

UnemotionalIf you have ever played poker, you will know the high of going “all in”. Your heart is racing like there’s no tomorrow, and you are hoping and praying that the cards will go your way. It’s the thrill of knowing you can double your money in a few moments and also knowing it can all disappear if things don’t go your way.

This type of excitement should not exist in any form in your trading. If you are a thrill seeker, go skydiving. If you are a gambler, go to a casino. If you are afraid to lose money, open a savings account.

Successful Day traders do not let their emotions interfere with their trading. Too often, we let fear, greed, or pride get in the way.

Fear

Fear will prevent you from making the right trades and make you lose out on immense opportunities. Fear stems from lack of knowledge and proper education. You are afraid because you can’t see that a trade is the right trade since you don’t know what the right trade looks like. Once you acquire the knowledge and training, you can begin to trust your decisions because they are based on facts and not emotion.

Greed

Greed is another emotion we must overcome to be successful. Many beginners experience “beginners luck”, and come out on top on their first few trades. Then they start believing that they should have traded with more money so their profits will be larger. So on the next trade, they trade with a large sum of money and they lose it all. Logic will dictate that they should trade with a smaller amount the next time around since they have less capital now. Unfortunately, humans are not logical creatures. Our greed takes over, and we start believing that if we put in more money, we will make up for the lost amount, and come out on top. Sadly, this cycle can only continue until you are completely out of money. The worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to have a successful first trade. (more…)

FEAR

There is nothing to fear except fear itself…’so said FDR when talking about America’s policies for exiting the great depression. Of all the known negative emotions that affect trading, I would argue that Fear is the most pervasive, and potentially the most destructicve. 

Even that other emotion we are always warned about – Greed can be alternatively described as ‘the fear of missing out’ and so it’s very essence is derived from fear. Frustration too is essentially born from fear as is Boredom, these being two other potentially harmful emotions that can afflict traders.

Fear in trading comes from the fear of a losing trade/losing run and the loss of money/not being right. This fear of losing stems from operating in an environment of uncertainty where the result is not known in advance. This uncertainty though does not have to result in fear per say.

The human brain is not naturally wired for trading in it’s evolutionary development. It takes years of practice and development for someone to re-train their brain to accept uncertainty and manage it. This is the necessary acquiring of the psychological skills required to trade successfully. Essentially when it is more natural to hope we fear and when it is more natural to fear – we hope….in trading we have to do the opposite. Add to this the technical skill requirement of having to be right at the right time as being right at the wrong time is still a losing trade, and it is not hard to see that a process has to be undertaken to train our brains from a fear based outlook of uncertainty to a risk management outlook toward it.
