S&P index and NASDAQ go out near highs as well

The S&P and NASDAQ index are closing at record highs once again. The broader indexes also traded to new all time high prices today.  The Dow industrial average close lower her by Apple and Boeing.

The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index rose 12.37 points or 0.36% to 3443.65. That was just off the all-time high price of 3444.21
  • Nasdaq index closed up 86.755 points or 0.76% at 11466.47. It’s new all time high price reached 11468.25
  • Dow industrial average fell -60.02 points or -0.21%to 28248.44. It’s high reached 28400.74 .
Salesforce after the close is reporting better-than-expected earnings on the top and bottom line.  EPS came in at $1.44 vs. $0.66 estimates. Revenues come in at $5.15 billion vs. an estimate for $4.9 billion. There shares are up over 7% in after-hours trading.
Salesforce was 1 of the 3 stocks added to the Dow industrial average (along with Honeywell and Amgen).  The 3 stocks replace Exxon Mobil (down -3.38%), Pfizer (-1.11%) and Raytheon (-1.5%).
Intuit it is also posting better-than-expected earnings on the top and bottom lines. There shares are up 4.52% in after-hours trading.

Dow industrial average leads the way

the S&P and NASDAQ index both closed at record levels, but for the day the Dow industrial average was the biggest percentage gainer.

The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index up 11.73 points or 0.35% at 3397.24.
  • The NASDAQ index rose 46.848 points or 0.42% at 11311.80
  • Dow industrial average rose 190.84 points or 0.69% at 27930.53

For the week, the NASDAQ led the way. The Dow industrial average ended the week unchanged.

For the year to date, the Dow industrial average still remains down. The NASDAQ index continues its stellar performance.

Exactly what Trump said in the interview
Trump spoke with Fox & Friends yesterday and touched on the non-farm payrolls report for Friday. His comments got a wide airing because they were framed as him predicting a strong employment report.
Here’s what he actually said:
Based on all the numbers we’re getting, and you’ll have a big number on Friday. I don’t know what it’s going to be, but you’ll have another jobs number. Last two months we set a record on the job numbers. And now we will have another big job number on Friday, so it’ll be interesting to see what that is. But we are heading definitely a V.
He explicitly says he doesn’t know what the number is going to be. Now, he’s a notorious liar so I wouldn’t necessarily take that at face value.
He does say it’s ‘based on the all the numbers we’re getting’ which implies there is some data behind that conclusion but it could be no more than a read on the +1.5m consensus. That’s ‘big’ by any historical definition and the President will surely tout anything over +1m as a huge win (and why not?).
There’s been far too much emphasis on the word ‘big’. It has two definitions, one is ‘large’ but the other is ‘important’ and it’s the latter that he’s using here.
