Brooks, Trading Price Action Reversals

The third and final volume of Al Brooks’s series is Trading Price Action Reversals: Technical Analysis of Price Charts Bar by Bar for the Serious Trader (Wiley, 2012). A trader does indeed have to be serious to read all three volumes because, according to the author himself, the task is daunting: some 570,000 words.
Only half of the final volume is about trend reversals. The rest deals with day trading, the first hour (the opening range), and putting it all together, including 78 trading guidelines, some of which you may not have encountered elsewhere.
This volume is the most accessible of the three, but then my very tired eyes did a lot of work before getting here. It would be difficult to skip the first two volumes and expect to understand the third.
Brooks himself is not primarily a reversal trader. As he writes, “I prefer high-percentage trades, and my most common trades are pullback entries and trading range fades. I especially like breakouts because when they are strong the probability of follow-through is often more than 70 percent. I look less often for reversal trades, because most reversal attempts fail, but I will take a strong reversal setup.” (p. 463) (more…)

Jim Chanos On Short Selling: The Power of Negative Thinking

Short selling and Jim Chanos go hand in hand. Whenever you see his name, you instantly think of Enron and how he unveiled the fraud there. The Kynikos Associates hedge fund manager is worth following due to his success but maybe more-so for the fact that he makes so many public appearances. If hedge funds operate behind a shroud of secrecy, then short sellers typically operate behind a shroud ten times as secret. Yet Chanos deviates from the norm and can often be found on television, doing interviews, and sharing his ideas. While talking his book might help some of his positions, it also means he’s more often than not cast as a villain. Chanos argues that good short sellers are born, not trained. to really gain an edge.

7 Characteristics of Great Traders

1. Education, education, education.

The old cliche touted by politicians when they can’t think of anything clever to say to their audience. The importance of education to success in trading cannot be placed on a high enough pedestal. You have to learn to earn, the best traders work obsessively to refine their edge further to stay ahead of the curve.

2. Adapt or Die.

Market conditions change and technology advances, thus the conditions for trading are always evolving, the rise in mechanical trading is testament to that. The very best traders through a process of education and adaptation are constantly staying ahead of the curve and creating ever new and ingenious methods to profit from the markets evolution.

3. Fail to plan, you plan to fail.

The best traders have a well documented plan; they know exactly what they are looking for and follow that plan to the letter. Their preparation for a trade starts long before the market open, it is this meticulous planning and importantly adherence to that plan that helps them avoid the biggest demons for any trader, over trading and revenge trading.

4. “Be like Machine”

As human beings emotions pay a key role in our existence, for a trader emotions can be a source of great pain. Trading psychology and the management of your emotions in a trade play a key role in overall success. Fear and greed can cut your winners short and let your losers run. Dealing with emotions follows on from your plan; the more robust your plan the less likely you are to fall into the emotional mine field. (more…)
