US major indices end lower. Dow, S&P and NASDAQ snap 3 day winning streak

Modest declines ahead of the presidential debate

The US stock market was relatively quiet today. The major indices all fell on the day and in the process snapped a 3 day winning streak for each.  The NASDAQ remains 8% below its record high. The S&P is some 7% below its record high.

The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index fell -16.13 points or -0.48% to 3335.47
  • NASDAQ index fell -32.27 points or -0.29% to 11085.25
  • Dow fell -131.4 points or -0.48% to 27452.66

Nasdaq leads the way

The major indices closed higher across the board with the NASDAQ ending up leading the way.  The S&P and NASDAQ have now posted 3 days of higher closes.  All 11 sectors of the S&P closed higher.  The energy and financials led the rally today.   The Dow post the best day cents September 9

  • S&P index up 53.14 points or 1.61% at 3351.60
  • NASDAQ index up 203.96 points or 1.87% at 11117.52
  • Dow industrial average rose 410.10 points or 1.51% at 27584.06.
The NASDAQ closed close to its highs of 11120.79. The Dow industrial average however close around 138 points from its intraday high.

The US stock indices are ending the session with gains across the board and near session highs:
  • NASDAQ and S&P closed higher for the 2nd consecutive day
  • The NASDAQ index close higher for the 1st weekly gain in 4 weeks
  • The S&P and Dow are not so lucky. They have fallen for 4 consecutive weeks
The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index rose 51.89 points or 1.60% to 3298.48. The low today reached 3228.44. The high extended to 3306.88
  • The NASDAQ index rose 241.29 points or 2.26% to 10913.56. The low today reached 10639.98. The high extended to 10939.54
  • The Dow rose by 358.71 points or 1.34% to 27174.15. The low today reached 26635.38. The high extended to 27239.29.
For the week, the NASDAQ gains today propelled the index to the 1st positive week in 4 weeks.

Dow breaks 3 day slide

The S&P and NASDAQ index broke a 4 day losing streak. The Dow industrial average broke its 3 day losing streak as investors liked Feds Powell comments on the economy is resilient, and the expectations at the Fed would remain on hold for a long period of time.

A look at the final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index rose 34.49 points or 1.05% to 3315.56. It’s high reached 33 to 0.31. The low extended to 3270.95.
  • Nasdaq index rose 184.83 points or 1.71% at 10963.62. Its high reached 10979.64. The low extended to 10737.51
  • Dow rose 140.34 points or 0.52% at 27288.04. It’s high reached 27333.09. The low extended to 26989.93.

The NASDAQ index nearly erases all their losses. Dow the worst performer.

The major indices all closed lower but well off the highs.

  • Dow down for the 3rd day in a row
  • NASDAQ closes 11% below its all-time high but nearly erased a -273 point decline (closed down -14.48 points)
