US stocks close higher on the day. Close out a stellar week for the major indices

  • Dow industrial average rose 33.07 points or 0.10% at 33748.64
  • S&P index rose 36.61 points or 0.93% at 3992.94
  • NASDAQ index rose 209.19 points or 1.88% at 11323.34
  • Russell 2000 rose 14.81 points or 0.79% at 1882.73

for the trading week:

  • Dow industrial average rose 4.15%
  • S&P index rose 5.9%

  • Russell 2000 rose 4.60%
  • Ark Innovation fund increased by a oversized 14.62%

Major US indices have a huge day higher as CPI inflation comes in lesson expectations NASDAQ index rises by 7.35%

  • Dow industrial average rose 1201.43 points or 3.7% had 33715.36
  • S&P index rose 207 22 points or 5.54% at 3956.38. The index closed above its 100 day moving average at 3901.
  • NASDAQ index was the biggest gainer with a 760.98 point rise or 7.35% at 11114.16
  • Russell 2000 rose 107.52 points or 6.11% at 1867.92.

It is a great move. It is the largest move higher since the pandemic. There is room to roam, but understand that there may come a day where it realized that it still rose 0.4% for the month. That inflation is still well above the 2% target for both the headline and the core.

However, enjoy it while you can and look for higher levels to potentially sell (like the 200 day MA).

The major US stock indices are closing higher for the 3rd consecutive day. The gains are led by the Dow industrial average also the pattern for the 3rd consecutive day. The rise in stocks ignored the tumble in the crypto assets:

  • Bitcoin is trading down -11.24%
  • Ethereum is trading down -17.2%
  • Doge is down -21.95%
  • FTT is down -77.5%

Over the stock markets 3 day rally the:

  • Dow has increased 3.68%.
  • The S&P is up 2.91%.
  • The NASDAQ index is up 2.64%.

Looking at today’s moves, the final numbers are showing:

  • Dow industrial average up 333.83 points or 1.02% at 33160.82
  • S&P index up 21.31 points or 0.56% at 3828.10
  • NASDAQ index up 51.69 points or 0.49% at 10616.21
  • Russell 2000 marginally lower today at -0.881 points or -0.05% at 1808.92

US major indices close higher. Gains led by the Dow 30 (again)

The major US indices are closing higher for the 2nd consecutive trading day. The gains are being led by the Dow 30, also for the 2nd consecutive day.

Within the Dow, the top 5 gainers were:

  • Walgreens, 4.05%
  • Salesforce 3.46%
  • Boeing 3.03%
  • Amgen 3.01%
  • Microsoft 2.96%

There were 3 Dow stocks which ended negative on the day

  • Nike -2.51%
  • 3M -0.14%
  • Verizon -0.11%

The gains in the major indices come despite a rise in the short term rates including the 2 year yield which is up about 7 basis points.

Although the yields are higher, the US dollar is moving lower and that help the stock tone today.

The greenback fell sharply vs the GBP (-1.23%), the EUR (-0.60%) and the CHF (-0.47%). The dollar was only up vs the greenback CAD.

The major US stock indices are closing near there lows. The S&P and the NASDAQ index both closed lower on the day and snap their 3 day win streak. The Dow industrial average eked out a small gain extending its win streak to 4 trading days (but just barely).

A look at the final numbers shows:

  • Dow industrial average is closing up 2.35 points or 0.01% at 31839.12
  • S&P index is down -28.51 points or -0.74% at 3830.59
  • NASDAQ index is down -228.11 points or -2.04% at 10971.00
  • Russell 2000 is up 8.17 points or 0.46% at 1804.33

The lower yields in the US tried to help the price rebounded intraday. In addition Bank of Canada’s rate hike of 50 basis points which was less than the 75 expected helped. However the headwinds from major big caps including Microsoft (-7.72%), Google (-9.65%), and Boeing (-8.70%) was just too hard to overcome. Apple fell -1.92% and Amazon fell by -4.10%. Both will announce their earnings after the close tomorrow.

Major US stock indices close higher for the 3rd consecutive day

After the close Microsoft and Alphabet will both report. Later in the week Meta, Apple, Amazon, and Intel will report.

  • Dow industrial average rose 337.10 points or 1.07% at 31836.75. The Dow industrial average is up 11.00% from its 2022 lows
  • S&P index rose 61.75 points or 1.63% at 3859.10. The S&P index is up around 10.4% from its 2022 lows
  • NASDAQ index rose 246.51 points or 2.25% at 11199.13. The NASDAQ index is up around 11.12% from the 2022 lows
  • Russell 2000 index rose 47.75 points or 2.73% at 1796.15. The Russell 2000 is up 9.34% from its 2022 lows
