Sky News with the latest from top US infectious diseases expert and White House adviser Anthony Fauci

  • “You could not possibly be positioned more poorly.”
Fauci also stated the obvious, warning that new cases would soon top 100,000 a day.

Coronavirus – UK PM Johnson to announce a new lockdown, through to until December 2

As COVID-19 cases in the UK accelerate higher Prime Minister Johnson will soon  announce another shutdown. The measures will take effect from Thursday after a vote in the Commons on Wednesday.

The main points, these via various UK media outlets with the info:
  • pubs and restaurants to close – takeaway and delivery only

  • outbound international travel banned, intra-UK travel restrictions (both except for work)
  • schools, universities open
  • outdoor exercise and recreation permitted

EU’s von der Leyen: Coronavirus cases will increase in the next 2-3 weeks

Comments by European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen

  • Urges governments to step up response to the pandemic
  • Spike in virus infections is ‘alarming’
  • Now is not the time to relax virus measures
Given how things have progressed, it is a fair assumption to say that the virus situation will remain rather serious throughout Europe during the winter.
There may be tighter restrictions being introduced now but it comes as a time when the second wave has already far outpaced the first wave of infections.
A likely scenario to consider is that if virus cases start to fall again and restrictions are eased, we could fall back into the same stop-start motion some time next year.

Germany is discussing a two-week coronavirus shut down

The German government pondering a 2 week lockdown, closing all but essential retail/services, kindergartens, schools

Earlier news France is considering similar:

  • French President Macron will address the nation on Wednesday evening
  • France said to be considering a month-long coronavirus national lockdown

Neither the French nor German shut downs as mentioned above are confirmed, these are the various media reports doing the rounds.

Germany reports 8,685 new coronavirus cases in latest update today

The ‘Monday effect’ is at play, as we see active cases surpass 100,000

Germany
The slightly “lower” count today is likely due to the typical ‘Monday effect’ i.e. lower testing conducted over the weekend. As of yesterday’s update, the active cases across the country has breached the 100,000 mark – doubling to that figure in just 10 days.
Meanwhile, another 24 deaths are reported today and that brings the total tally to 10,056 persons. Just last week, there were about ~100 districts in Germany deemed as ‘high risk’ but that figure has now grown to 251 districts.

Europe reports another day of big COVID numbers

Coronavirus daily numbers from Europe:

Coronavirus daily numbers from Europe:
  • France reports 45,422 cases (positivity rate 16% vs 8% a week ago)
  • UK reports 23,012 cases vs 20,530 the day prior
  • Italy reports 19,644 vs 19,143
  • Netherlands reports 8669
That’s a new record for Italy/France and the others are all very close. Expect the weekly pattern to show lower numbers on Mon/Tues and then pick back up on Wednesday.
In an illustration of how fast cases are rising, here are the portion of total cases since the outbreak that were reported in the past week:
  • France 13.9%
  • UK 15.2%
  • Italy 19.1%
  • Germany 13.0%
The charts above don’t yet include today’s data.
Importantly, Italian citizens will be asked not to leave their towns and the government is weighing a partial lockdown. Spain will hold a special cabinet meeting on Sunday that would allow regions to implement curfews.

France reports record 41,622 new virus cases

The spike in virus cases in France is out of control

  • Deaths up 162 to 34,210
  • Yesterday there were 26,600 cases
The pace of the recent rise looked for a few days like it might be leveling off but this is a terrible daily number. France imposed a curfew about a week ago so they may be hoping that will curb the spread of the virus but a few more days of growth like this and we’re going to see harsher measures.

Covid data in the US trending the wrong way

Hospitalizations up. ICU patients on the rise

The Covid data in the US is trending the wrong way as the US election looms on the horizon.  Some numbers according to Bloomberg:

  • New York doubled its case count over 2000. New Jersey at its highest case count since July
  • 10 other states reported records including Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio
  • the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention citing for national studies predicted a probable inpatient increase of is much as 6200 daily over the next 4 weeks
  • the hospitalization count reached 39,230 of which 8178 were in the ICU units (a 2 month high)
  • the number of patients on ventilators reached 1889. That was the highest since September 10
  • 37 states are reporting increased hospitalizations
  • In Nevada where hundred supporters gathered on Sunday to see Pres. Donald Trump, the 9.1% positivity rate reached a 6 month high
  • US Covid stats for the day showed 60,426 new cases vs. 60,061 yesterday. Deaths increased by 863 vs. 513 the previous day
The good news is that deaths are not following the case count
