Japan press reports a state of emergency to be declared on Tuesday or before

In that post some alarming developments from Tokyo over the weekend:
  • Tokyo Metropolitan government confirmed 143 new coronavirus infections on Sunday
  • that’s the highest rate of increase on record
  • total in Tokyo now is 1,034
  • The daily infection rate has more than tripled in just a week
Japan had been ahead of the curve on the outbreak but have since let their guard slip.

Wondering what time the BOJ announcement is expected today? Here you go!

Its the first BOJ statement for the year today. The Bank of Japan does not have a specific pre-announced time for issuing the statement at the conclusion of their monetary policy meeting.

  • It is likely in the 0230-0330 GMT time window (see below for why this a reasonable estimate)
  • The later the announcement, the more likely there is some material change to bank policy or guidance. So, if the clock ticks past 0315GMT, the likelihood of change increases.
  • Governor Kuroda will give a press conference after the announcement, and for that we do have a scheduled time, at 0630 GMT
Expectations are for no change in policy settings today:

Nikkei 225 closes higher by 0.16% at 22,079.09

Tokyo’s main index barely hangs on to gains in mixed trading day

Nikkei 20-09

It has been a sluggish session overall for Asian equities in general as the risk mood stays more subdued after seeing US stocks give back gains in overnight trading. China did cut its one-year LPR by 5 bps but it hardly is breathing life into equities on the session.

The Hang Seng index is flat while the Shanghai Composite is up by just 0.2% as investors appear to be more cautious still to wrap up the week. US futures are pretty much flat so that tells us that equities are still sidelined to begin European trading.
USD/JPY sits lower at 107.87 though as the yen keeps pace after gains from yesterday amid weaker Treasury yields to start the morning.

Toyota unveils tiny, chatty robot

— Toyota Motor plans a rollout next year for a robot that sits in the palm of a hand and carries on simple conversations, the automaker said Monday.

The Japanese company will showcase the robot, dubbed “Kirobo Mini,” at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies, or Ceatec, opening Tuesday in Chiba Prefecture. Many home-use robots are expected to be featured at the expo.

The robot, which sits 10cm high, remembers previous conversations and places visited, giving it the ability to enhance the experience. Kirobo Mini reads the user’s facial expression when it talks. It also bases discussions on information about automobiles or the home acquired over a network.
