S&P and NASDAQ closing at record highs and near highs for the day

Dow lags as Boeing, Chevron, AMEX slumps

The S&P and NASDAQ index closed at record high levels and near highs for the day. Facebook shares gave the NASDAQ index a boost in the last few hours of trading as the district court dismissed the FTC antitrust case against Facebook (up 4.18%). Intel (up 2.81%) PayPal (up 1.4%), Microsoft (up 1.4%-record high), Apple (up 1.26%) all had strong days the upside.
The Dow lagged and was down on the day as Boeing shares slumped due to a reported letter from a Federal Aviation Administration official to Boeing, says it is unlikely to receive certification for its 777X long-range aircraft until mid-to-late 2023 at the earliest ( BA shares felt -3.39%.)  Other underperformers in the Dow included Chevron(-3.09%), AMex (-2.76%), American Express (-2.76%), Travelers (-1.5%) and Visa (-1.37%).
A look at the final numbers shows:
  • S&P index +9.91 points or 0.23% at 4290.61.  A new all-time high of 4292.14 was reached today
  • NASDAQ index rose 140.12 points or 0.98% at 14500.51. A new all-time high of 14505.19 was reached today
  • Dow fell -150.57 points or -0.44% at 34283.27.  That is off the high of 34449.65 but above the low of 34186.13.

Nasdaq 3 day string of record closes snapped

The US major stock indices are closing mixed with the Dow leading the way. The S&P closed higher for the 2nd consecutive day. The Nasdaq snapped it’s three day of record closes with a modest loss.
  • S&P index rose 14.33 points or 0.34% at 4280.81
  • NASDAQ index fell -9.32 points or -0.06% at 14360.39
  • Dow gained 238.67 points or 0.7% at 34435.49
  • Russell 2000 index rose 0.84 points or 0.04% at 2334.46
For the week, all the major indices are closing higher with the small-cap Russell 2000 and the Dow 30 leading the way:
  • S&P index rose 2.74%
  • NASDAQ index rose 2.35%
  • Dow industrial average rose 3.44%
  • Russell 2000 of small-cap stocks rose up 4.59%
In the European equity markets today, the major indices closed higher with the exception of the France’s CAC which fell -0.13%. The biggest gain or was the UK FTSE 100 which rose 0.37%:

S&P and NASDAQ index post record closes

Dow rises over 300 points and leads the way with a gain close to 1%

The major indices saw solid gains across the board with the Dow industrial average leading the way after Pres. Biden and a group of 20 centrist senators agreed on a $1 trillion infrastructure plan.
The NASDAQ and S&P index both closes higher and at record levels. The NASDAQ record was the third day in a row.  The Russell 2000 index gained 30.16 points or 1.31% at 2333.62.
The final numbers are showing:
  • S&P index up 24.64 points or 0.58% at 4266.48
  • NASDAQ index up 97.98 points or 0.69% at 14369.71
  • Dow industrial average up 322.65 points or 0.95% at 34196.89.
After the close the Fed will announce the stress test results for the US banks. Today financials all rose smartly with Wells Fargo up 2.78%. Citigroup up 2.4%, PNC financial 2.18%. J.P. Morgan rose 0.91% but like other major financials.

S&P and Dow industrial average close lower

The NASDAQ index closed at a another record high for the second consecutive day. The new intraday high reached 14317.66. The price is closing while off that high price at 14271.73.

The NASDAQ index is closing at a record high level. The new intraday all time high price reached 14269.77.
The S&P index got to within two points of its all-time record high at 4257.11. The high price reached 4255.84.

Dow up nearly 600 points as Fed concerns ease a bit.

All the major indices are closing higher on the day led by the Dow industrial average which rallied near 600 points. Stocks were supported by less hawkish than expected comments from Feds Bullard and Kaplan.
