All major indices close higher once again and once again at record levels:

  • NASDAQ index closed at a record high for the 44th times in 2021

  • Dow industrial average up 103.44 points or 0.28% at 36431.39 . The new intraday all time high price reached 36565.73
  • S&P index up 4.19 points or 0.09% at 4701.72.
  • NASDAQ index up 10.77 points or 0.07% at 15982.36
  • Russell 2000 up 5.66 points or 0.23% at 2442.74. The new intraday record high reached 2458.855

S&P and NASDAQ close at record highs for the seventh straight day

NASDAQ up for the 10th consecutive trading day

The major indices jumped higher on the stronger jobs report. Despite the stronger report, US yields moved down as follow-through buying in debt instruments after the FOMC decision are helping the tone:

  • Dow industrial average closes at a record as well after yesterday’s declines
  • The Russell 2000 index also closed at a record level
  • The NASDAQ index traded above the 16,000 level for the first time ever on its way to a new all-time high of 16053.39

NASDAQ, Russell 2000 lead the way

The major indices are all closing higher and at record levels as the Fed tapers but will take it’s time in taking away the punch bowl.
The more rate sensitive NASDAQ and small-cap Russell 2000 index were the out performers.
  • The NASDAQ index rose over 1%
  • the Russell 2000 index rose 1.8%. Year-to-date the Russell index is up 21.73%

  • Dow industrial average closed at a record level for the fourth consecutive day
  • The NASDAQ closed at a record level for the 41st time
  • S&P index closed at a record level in 2021 for the 62nd time

Dow, S&P, NASDAQ close at record highs. Russell 2000 trades to a new intraday all-time high

Russell 2000 sets the first intraday high since March

A quadruple record close for the major indices. In addition to the Dow S&P and NASDAQ posting a record closes, the Russell 2000 index also joined the party with its own new all-time high.
  • NASDAQ recorded its fourth straight record close
  • Dow industrial average closed at a record level for its third consecutive day.
  • NASDAQ closed at a record level for the 40th time
  • Dow industrial average closed at a record level for the 41th time
  • S&P index closed at a record level for the 61st time
  • NASDAQ is up for the seventh straight day
  • Winning sectors included Materials rose 1.1% real estate rose 0.94%, technology rose 0.82% and consumer staples rose 0.69%
  • Losing sectors included energy which fell -1.01%, discretionary fell -0.62%
The gains come despite the expectations at the Federal Reserve will start to taper process when they announce their decision tomorrow at 2 PM ET. The expectations are for $15 billion. That would put the Fed on schedule for finishing the taper by midyear 2022. There is a possibility that they speed up the taper process could be a problem for the stock market if that should happen.

  • S&P index rose 17.04 points or 0.37% at 4630.71
  • NASDAQ index rose 53.69 points or 0.34% at 15649.60

The biggest winner was the small-cap Russell 2000. It rose 60.93 points or 2.65% at 2358.12. The Russell 2000 is up 5.2% over the last month
