Labour would win EU elections, European Parliament poll shows

The Labour party would emerge as the biggest UK force in the European Parliament in British EU elections, according to new projections which show a surge in support for Nigel Farage’s Brexit party.

Labour would return 19 MEPs to Brussels in an EU election which will need to be held next month if Theresa May cannot pass her Brexit deal through parliament before May 22.

The Tories would be in second with 12 seats, and the Brexit party led by Mr Farage, on 10 MEPs, according to the projections. The UK Independence Party would be in fourth place with nine seats.

The projections are the first time the European Parliament has published new MEP seat forecasts to include the UK. Analysts have warned the estimates for the UK are more unpredictable than most as formal campaigning for the elections has yet to begin in Britain.

An internal poll from the EP, carried out on April 10 and seen by the FT, gave Labour a much bigger lead with 28 MEPs.

The UK’s participation in the elections has been opposed by EU leaders like Guy Verhofstadt, the parliament’s Brexit chief, who think it will import the “poison” of the leave campaign into European politics.

ICYMI: Satellite images show movement at North Korea’s main nuclear site

Some news doing the rounds referring to satellite imagery taken last week of North Korea’s main nuclear site.

Which is the Yongbyon nuclear site
The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC says images show activity near the site’s Uranium Enrichment Facility and Radiochemistry Laboratory, and that:
  • “n the past, these specialized railcars appear to have been associated with the movement of radioactive material or reprocessing campaigns.
Something to keep an eye on.
But its not surprising really. If nuclear development ever did halt in NK (which is very doubtful) it would have restarted again after the failure of the Hanoi summit since.

China’s Xi sends congratulatory message to Kim Jong Un on re-election win

Sorry, should’ve said “re-election” since nobody else is allowed to stand

  • China says highly values its friendship with North Korea
  • Says willing to push forward its relationship with North Korea
Tensions between the world and North Korea has somewhat deteriorated after the Trump-Kim summit fracas in Vietnam but it’s good to see China still making communicating such messages (as they have done in the past) to keep some semblance of diplomacy – if you can even call it that.
The only vote that matters:

More on Kim Jong Un urging ‘severe blow’ to those sanctioning North Korea

More:
  • told his party to push “self-reliance”
  • signaling his determination to hold the line in talks with U.S. President Trump
  • Kim told Workers’ Party of Korea officials Wednesday that the country should strike at those who thought they could make North Korea surrender through sanctions, without elaborating, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported Thursday

Yen traders – heads up for potential North Korea headlines today

North Korea’s ruling party central committee will meet in a plenary session Wednesday.

Per report from the Korean Central News Agency, i.e.  NK state media.
News that NK has continued developing nuclear weapons and delivery systems (ballistic missiles, missile-capable submarines) have hammered home the naivety of the ‘summits’ called by the US administration. If NK ramps up aggression you can expect that to be a positive input for the yen on a ‘flight to safety’ (liquidity) basis.

Trump: China deal moving along nicely, US economy is looking very strong

Trump conjures up an all-in-one tweet

He’s talking up the economy while sounding upbeat on the China and USMCA deals, and at the same time taking a snipe at the Fed labeling the central bank’s actions as “unnecessary and destructive”.

Despite the unnecessary and destructive actions taken by the Fed, the Economy is looking very strong, the China and USMCA deals are moving along nicely, there is little or no Inflation, and USA optimism is very high!

Certainly an interesting start to the day at the very least. If anything else, it goes to show that this whole Trump vs the Fed debate isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

US press: Mueller’s findings more troubling for Trump than indicated.

New York Times reporting

South Korean official says North Korea could be on the brink of a missile launch

Report in the Korea JoongAng Daily

  • North Korea could be on the brink of a missile launch from a pad on its western coast
  • A series of ominous signs – the foremost being the near complete restoration of a missile launch site on the western coast – is fueling speculation
  • Backing up a briefing made by Seoul’s spy chief, Suh Hoon, at South Korea’s National Assembly last Friday, the official said the North’s reconstruction of the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, which started in February, is effectively complete, and a launch only needs a go-ahead from leader Kim Jong-un.
