Iran says fully prepared to tackle US sanctions but will not reveal its plans

Comments by Iran’s economy minister in reaction to US sanctions

I don’t think Iran has a lot of fighting powder to hit back at the US but they probably have mitigating actions to help alleviate pressure from the latest sanctions. The real fear is if they feel emboldened enough to take more military action as what we saw last week when they shot down a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

Either way, tensions between the two are likely to escalate further before they get any better in the coming days/weeks.

Trump to meet Putin, Xi, Modi, Merkel, and others at G20

A US official outlines who Trump will be having bilateral meetings with at the G20 later this week in Japan

  • Putin – to discuss Iran, Ukraine, Middle East, Syria, arms control
  • Indian PM Modi
  • Saudi crown prince – to discuss escalation in tensions in Iran and threats to regional stability
  • Turkey’s Erdogan
  • Germany’s Merkel

And, of course (drumroll please), Chinese President Xi!

  • opportunity to “maintain his engagement”
  • see where China is on the trade dispute
  • “The president is quite comfortable with any outcome”
  • meeting with Xi likely to be on second day of G20 (details still to be confirmed)

Trump to also travel to Korea:

  • no plans to meet with Kim Jong Un

Weekend Trump on Fed’s Powell: “I didn’t ever threaten to demote him”

UP President Trump spoke in a TV  interview on Sunday.

Trump reiterated he has the right to demote Powell but never threatened to do so
  • I have the right to do that, but I haven’t said that.”
Says the Fed has jacked up rates too quickly:
  • I had somebody that raised the rates very rapidly — too much. He made a mistake, that’s been proven.
This comes after last week the Fed kept rates and hold and Powell emphasises Fed independence from the politicians:
  • It should be noted that Fed Chair Powell gave the middle finger to Trump

Weekend Trump on Iran – US to impose “major” additional sanctions

US President Donald Trump has  said over the weekend he’ll impose “major” additional sanctions on Iran.

  • economic pressure will be maintained
  • Wants to see Iranian leadership change course, specifically on developing nukes
  • “We’re putting additional sanctions on … we are moving rapidly.”
This comes as Iran says it’ll be exceeding the limits that have been imposed on its nuclear programme.

White House trade advisor Navarro: Either we get a great deal with China, or we don’t

He makes it a binary decision but what is “great”?

Peter Navarro is on the wires saying:

  • We either get a great deal with China or we don’t
So what he says is a binary decision. It’s one or the other. What we we don’t know is what “great” is.
Having said that, what we do know is if a deal is done (whatever it is), it will be “Great!”. It will be the greatest deal since the great USMCA deal.
Navarro now adds:
  • China to devaluing currency to offset tariffs
  • level of additional China tariffs not decided yet

Trump says he stopped attack on Iran because it would not have been proportional

Trump comments

  • More sanctions on Iran added late yesterday
  • Says he is in no hurry on Iran
  • Iran can never have nuclear weapons
The Trump administration leaked yesterday that the President halted the attack.
Iran said the drone it shot down yesterday was accompanied by a P-8 spy plane that also violated its airspace. The airforce commander said they chose not to target that plane because it was occupied with 35 crewmen.

China press – Impact of further US tariffs on Chinese economy likely limited

People’s Daily newspaper piece written by the head of the banking and insurance regulator, Guo Shuqing

  • impact of additional U.S. tariffs on the Chinese economy will be very limited
  • fluctuations in the yuan exchange rate were normal in the short term
  • over a longer horizon the currency would not continue to lose value given China’s economic fundamentals.
Huh. OK then.

Rumours of explosions at an Iran nuclear plant (rumours folks, unconfirmed)

There are reports an explosion has been heard near the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran.

Rumour only ladies and gentlemen. With all the tensions surrounding US / Iran relations this may spread. Hopefully its false, nuclear plants are not to be messed with.
I’ll keep us all updated. Currencies would likely see flows into yen and out of risk on this.
Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is 17 kilometres southeast of the city of Bushehr:

China and North Korea agree they need to work together

Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping agree North Korea and China need to work together in face of changing international environment

  • Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping agreed to have close strategic communication and deepen cooperation in various fields

KCNA (NK state media) report on the meeting between the leaders of NK and China).

I’m gonna guess that the subtext to this is they both have a common enemy … or no?

How to tell its time to wash your hands.

Trump asked if US will strike Iran says “You’ll soon find out”

Not exactly preaching peace

I wouldn’t read too much into that. Trump loves to say things like ‘you’ll soon find out’.
Trump made the comment ahead of a meeting with Canada’s Trudeau. There could be some CAD risks around the meeting. Canada is pushing on tariffs on uranium, softwood lumber and some issues around the detention of Huawei’s CFO.
