European shares end the day with mixed results

France’s CAC, and UK FTSE 100 close higher

The major European indices and the day with mixed results in an up and down session

  • German DAX, -0.2%. The intraday high reached +0.32%. The low was at -0.27%
  • France’s CAC, +0.2%. The intraday high reached +0.47%. The low was at -0.04%
  • UK FTSE 100 +0.4%. The intraday high reached 0.63%. The low was at -0.05%
  • Spain’s Ibex, -0.1%. The intraday high reached +0.45%. The low extended to -0.58%
  • Italy’s FTSE MIB, -0.1%. The intraday high reached +0.39%. The low extended to -0.48%

In other markets as European/London traders look to exit:

  • SPot gold is down $-7.20 or -0.38% at $1892.
  • Spot silver is down $0.26 or -0.96% at $27.62.
  • WTI crude oil futures are up $0.44 or 0.64% at $69.67. The high price has extended to $69.81. Recall from yesterday the high peaked at $70 even and found willing sellers. The price today is off it’s lows at $68.47
  • Bitcoin is trading down $1760 or minus 08.0 percent at $31,730.

Tepid and flattish tones in early trades

  • German DAX futures -0.1%
  • UK FTSE futures flat
  • Spanish IBEX futures -0.1%
This mirrors the mood in US futures, which are seen down ~0.2% at the moment, following the gains posted on Friday after the more Goldilocks jobs report.
There isn’t much of a firm directional move to start the new week with FX also keeping rather muted besides some mild weakness in the pound. GBP/USD is down 30 pips to 1.4125 but it isn’t anything outside the range of the past three weeks.

German DAX trade to a new all-time high today. France’s CAC traded to its highest level since 2000 this week

the European shares are ending the day mostly higher. The exception is the Spain’s Ibex which is down around -0.5%. For the week, the major indices are mostly higher again with Spain’s Ibex trading in the red. The German DAX traded to a new all-time high at 15705.89. France’s CAC traded to its highs level since 2000 at 6522.23 during yesterday’s trade. The high price today fell just short of that level at 6517.93.

The provisional closes are showing:
  • German DAX, up 0.4%
  • France’s CAC, up 0.1%
  • UK’s FTSE 100, up 0.1%
  • Spain’s Ibex, -0.5%
  • Italy’s FTSE MIB, +0.3%
For the trading week, the major indices moved higher with again the exception being the Spanish Ibex:
  • German DAX, +1.1%
  • France’s CAC, +0.5%
  • UK’s FTSE 100, +0.7%
  • Spain’s Ibex, -1.4%
  • Italy’s FTSE MIB, +1.4%.
A look around the markets, as London/European traders look to exit shows:
  • Spot gold, plus $21.85 or 1.17% at $1892.61. The hi has been able to stay below the $1900 are level at $1896.28.
  • Spot silver is up $0.36 or 1.32% at $27.79. That is off the high price of $27.84 but above the low of $27.23.
  • WTI crude oil futures are up $0.41 at $69.22. It’s high price at $69.76 has remained below the key resistance at $70.
  • Bitcoin is down $-1723 or -4.45% at $36,995. The high price reached $39,291.24. The low price extended to $35,593.23. Elon Musk tweeted that he was more or less breaking up with bitcoin (or out of love at least).
In the US stock market, the major indices are higher led by the NASDAQ index:
  • S&P index up 28.4 points or 0.68% at 4221.
  • NASDAQ index up 185 points or 1.36% at 13800.
  • Dow industrial average up 98 points or 0.28% at 34675.54
In the US debt market, the yields are sharply lower with the 10 year leading the way at -6.1 basis points. The two – 10 year spread is down to 141.88 basis points which is well below the 147.05 closing level from yesterday’s trading.

Tepid tones to kick start the session

  • German DAX futures -0.1%
  • UK FTSE futures -0.1%
This mirrors the tone in US futures, which are seen down roughly 0.1% for now.
In Asia, the Nikkei closes down 0.4% while the Topix saw a more flattish close in a mixed showing for the region. The Hang Seng is down 0.5% while the Shanghai Composite is up 0.2% going into the closing stages.
The adverse reaction in equities yesterday is still fresh so bear that in mind as we look towards the US non-farm payrolls report later in the day.

German DAX closes at a new record high

The European shares are ending the day mostly higher. Spain’s Ibex is the exception.

The provisional closes are showing:
  • German DAX, +0.2% (a new record close)
  • France’s CAC, +0.5%
  • UK’s FTSE 100, +0.4%
  • Spain’s Ibex, -0.2%
  • Italy’s FTSE MIB, +0.2%.
In other markets as London/European traders look to exit:
  • Gold is up $5.70 or 0.3% at $1906.12
  • Silver is up $0.18 or 0.67% $28.08.
  • WTI crude oil futures are up $0.76 or 1.12% at $68.48
  • Bitcoin is up $1700 or 4.68% at $38,034
In the US stock market, the major indices are higher. The Dow is working on its fifth straight day to the upside. The S&P is up for the last five trading days.  The Nasdaq is trading near its highs for the day:
  • S&P index +14.2 to points or 0.34% at 4216.33
  • NASDAQ index up 37.11 points or 0.28% at 13773.50
  • Dow up 93 points or 0.27% at 34668
In the US treasury market, yields are lower with the tenure yield down around 1.9 basis points.

France’s CAC closes at the highest level since 2000.

The German DAX is closing up about 1% and in doing so is closing at a new all-time high.  The France’s CAC is also closing higher and at the highest level since August 2000. Below is a look at the daily chart of the German Dax.

In the European debt market, the benchmark 10 year yields are closing mostly higher with the UK yield up 3.3 basis points.

In other markets as Europe/London traders look to exit for the day:
  • Spot gold is trading down seven dollars or -0.37% at $1899.70.
  • Spot silver is trading unchanged at $28.03
  • WTI crude oil futures are up $1.49 or 2.23% at $67.81. The high price extended to $68.87. That was the highest level since October 2018.
US stocks are trading mixed with the NASDAQ lower. The Dow and S&P are higher but well off the session highs:
  • S&P index up 5.24 points or 0.12% at 4209.30
  • NASDAQ index -15.67 points or -0.11% at 13732.20
  • Dow up 137 points or 0.4% at 34666.90

European equity close: Selling intensifies late in the day

UK markets were closed today

There’s a negative tone in early week trade with Japan also falling by 1%. That could reflect some end-of-month flows. We’ll get a better picture tomorrow when liquidity returns.

  • French CAC -0.7%
  • Italy MIB +0.2%
About half of the selling came in the final 40 minutes of trade, at the same time as the jumps in the US dollar against the yen, euro and pound.

Tepid tones in early trades

  • German DAX futures -0.2%
  • Spanish IBEX futures -0.2%
This carries over the slightly softer tone from Asia, with the Nikkei ending down by 1.0% and the Topix falling by 1.1%. The Hang Seng is down 0.6% though mainland Chinese equities have pared earlier losses, with the Shanghai Composite now up 0.1%.
US futures are muted but just be aware that the cash market will be closed in observance of Memorial Day today.

The major European indices have moved higher on the day and the week. With most European it’s open on Monday, there is still one more day of trading for the month. However, the major indices are all trading higher for the month as well.
