China has reported 113 new coronavirus cases

Uh-oh. This is a big jump from the previous day’s report of 39.

And the largest number increase since November 13.
China is is still aggressively pursuing a ‘zero’ policy so this jump in cases is likely to see a rapid introduction of counter-measures.
From a global markets perspective, the risk is further disruption to supply chains and also to Chinese economic growth.

Two suspected cases of the new COVID-19 variant have been reportedly detected in Belgium

That would make Belgium the first European country to detect the strain

According to The Telegraph here. As mentioned earlier, as much as the EU says it would want to shore up border controls to prevent the latest virus variant from entering, little do they know that it has already been spreading in the region.
The worry here is that the same can be said for the rest of the world too.
As far as countries go, that would see Belgium add to the list of South Africa, Botswana, and Hong Kong once confirmed.

‘Zero Covid’ policy persists in China – this report via CNBC on the outbreak in Beijing:

  • Local authorities are on high alert after a handful of locally transmitted coronavirus cases over the weekend indicated the latest spike in cases might be spreading beyond just a few regions.
  • Beijing’s health commission announced Monday that residents who had left the city for business trips or leisure trips to areas with confirmed cases should “postpone” returning
The report is here for more.
The mid-year outbreak of the virus in China resulted in widespread disruption to the economy, if the ‘zero’ policy can stamp out the spread quickly these will be limited this time around but the risk is further spread and tightening of movement again.

Russia COVID-19 outbreak accelerating with low vaccine rate

Vaccination rates across Eastern Europe are low, which is stymieing reopening plans.

Last week:
  • Russia orders a one-week lockdown with covid cases at record high
  • Moscow is the country’s most populous city, to shut down all but essential business October 30 – November 7
Vaccine hesitancy is a big problem in Russia, only around 36% of its population has one vaccine shot so far.
