rssThe recent #Bitcoin hash rate drop already looks like only a small variance, or blip, on the chart.
That’s awkward.
Copper set for further gains?
Weaker USD helps copper higher
The copper rally continues with momentum driven by global recovery hopes. Dr Copper is long seen as a key indicator for the health of global markets and right now the diagnosis is that the world has a clean bill of health and should enjoy the vigours of this stimulus supported environment. Make hay while the sound shines.
Pullback time or more gains ahead?
Markets don’t move in straight lines, so a pullback is inevitable at some point. The bullish picture remains firmly in place. This was confirmed on Bloomberg this week by the Trading house and copper bull Trafigura Group who cited ‘extraordinarily strong’ demand that’s coming from across the board.here are a few bearish developments that I came across on Bloomberg.
- Backwardation has eased with the cash metal less than $1 above benchmark futures
- The International Copper Study Group has rejected the consensus view saying the market will see a small surplus this year.
- The 14 day RSI has been in overbought (+70) for seven session. Personally speaking that is what you would expect from a thriving market anyway, so it is only a note of possible caution and not an alarm bell in my book. Markets, especially strong ones, can remain technically over bought or sold for weeks on end.
On top of the above Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Grant Sporre says that record copper price is now not corresponding to physical indicators in the market.
The bottom line
Copper still remains a buy on the dips in the medium term. However, as always manage risk and only look for key areas to enter. The pullback will come, but until then buy the dip seems the sensible option as long as risk is defined.

Sunday evening US Gasoline futures jump higher after huge US east coast pipeline shutdown
Futures trading (night session) has opened in the US Sunday evening.
Gasoline futures are higher on the news:
- Weekend – US fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline cyberattack forced shutdown of its fuel network
The Colonial pipeline network is a massive deal – it distributes nigh on half of gasoline and diesel to the US east coast.
Oil futures are up alongside. The big impact of this event is not on crude though.
The latest from the firm (Colonial) is that some of the smaller lines between terminals and delivery points are back online, but its main lines are still shut.

Goldman Sachs explain the NFP miss – blaming laziness
The US nonfarm payroll report on Friday was an epic miss on estimates.
Consensus was for around an addition of a million jobss.
GS was above consensus, circa +1.3million if memory serves.
The number (let’s get another drum roll ICYMI):
- US April non-farm payrolls +266K vs +1000K expected
The market impact:
Goldman Sachs explain the miss by blaming laziness, sSaying that the labor supply appears to be tighter than the unemployment rate suggests
- likely reflecting the impact of unusually generous unemployment benefits and lingering virus-related impediments to working.
‘Unusually generous unemployment benefits.’ I’m calling b/s on that. But, there you go.
Weekend – US fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline cyberattack forced shutdown of its fuel network
Colonial Pipeline operates an over 5,500-mile pipeline network from Texas to New Jersey.
- a ransomware cyberattack forced the company to shut its network down
- As of posting the network is still down. which threatens a shortage of fuel in the eastern US
- major segments of the Colonial system remain offline
- truckers in the US have been given the go-ahead to extend their driving hours in an effort to ensure fuel deliveries

Weekend news – Iran says it will extend its (nuke) deal with the IAEA if needed
The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke to Japanese media, NHK, Friday.
He said Iran may consider extending its cooperation (referring to inspections of its nuclear sites) with the International Atomic Energy Agency
- Iran hopes that enough progress will be made in the talks on the removal of US sanctions and other issues by late May so that there will be no need for an extension
- But, if needed, Iran will consider an extension at a proper time.

Another sign that tensions with Iran are slowly easing back a little.
