Two Facts

Iam tracking Indian Stock Market and Global Market since 1992.Yes after 17 years ..I had seen these are two real facts of Trading.

#1: Small-range market periods lead to large-range market periods. Low volatility breeds high volatility, which in turn leads to low volatility.
Just about the time everyone is resigned that market conditions will never change is exactly when conditions will change.
#2: Trading is a business where you can never be right. Never. No matter what we do, our mistakes will always outnumber our correct decisions. That’s why grading ourselves on every minute` decision will come up with more of a batting average score than college test score.
Mistakes can always outnumber correct actions… so long as correct actions outweigh mistakes. It ain’t the size of our right or wrong actions that counts: it’s how much they weigh in $$ values. Size does matter.
The great news is, as traders we never have to be perfect. We don’t even have to be 50% perfect. We only need to maximize our wins and minimize our losses. And we only need to win once per day, more days than not to be good. Just barely profitable = the top ten percentile of our profession. Anything beyond that is outperforming 90% of the field.

Trading Is A Business. Treat It Like One.

As I was preparing a presentation and looking for some interesting material I came across “Trader Vic – Methods Of A Wall Street Master” and this paragraph got my attention:

“I base my business philosophy on three principles, listed here in terms of importance: preservation of capital, consistent profitability, and the persuit of superior returns. These principals are basic in the sense that they underlie and guide all my market decisions. Each principle carries a different weight in my speculative strategy, and they evolve from one to another. That is, preservation of capital leads to consistent profits, which makes pursuit of superior returns possible.”

This was written in 1991 but I think its still a very valid proposition. I am also adding this line from the same book, “In my view, the way to build wealth is to preserve capital, make consistent profits, and wait patiently for the right opportunity to make extraordinary gains.”

Trading is a business

Trading can be mastered if you concentrate your efforts on how you will react to price rather than desiring to predict it. Reacting is a business decision, predicting is an ego play.

Traders want to make money. Losses in the long run don’t matter. Forecasters (prophets) want to be right (ego). And that’s all that they are concerned about.

Don’t decide anything (ego), let the market do that job for you (business).

Like any other business you have a business plan and the financial portion of that plan is the most important.

In this business your inventory is stocks, bonds, futures or options. Like any other business you define what an acceptable loss is on an item and what is an acceptable profit for the risk undertaken. Like any other business if the item of inventory doesn’t do what you expected it to do, you put it on sale and liquidate it to raise capital to purchase inventory that will do what you want it to do. Your acceptable loss is your stop. Your money management system tells you how much that is. Your mark up is dependent upon your trading system and trading style. It doesn’t make any difference if you are a day trader or an investor. Like any business, some turn their inventory 10 times a day, some 20 times a year and some only twice a year. Your trading style and inventory volatility will tell you what your turnover rate will be.

Trading is a business and if you treat it as anything else you will be a loser.

Hard Realities for Traders

* If you don’t save a good portion of your earnings in successful years of trading, you won’t last during the less successful years;

* If you don’t have a solid nest egg of savings to support you while you’re learning trading, you won’t survive your learning curve;

* Everyone has a passion for trading; if you don’t have a passion for learning to trade, take a pass on financial markets and find the field of endeavor that offers intrinsic reward;

* If you’re living for your trading, you won’t make it trading for a living. Other things need to sustain you in the lean times, particularly the things that are more important than markets;

* The ratio of time spent working on your trading to time spent actually trading is predictive of long-term career success;

* In any performance field, the percentage of participants who can sustain a living from their craft is under 5%; always have a Plan B;

* No one can make you successful as a trader if you lack the requisite talents and skills; a mentor can, at best, help you make the most of the talents and skills you possess;

* Even if you are very successful as a trader, your annual income will be a fraction of your leveraged portfolio size;

* Your risk and reward will always be proportional: count on drawdowns of at least half of what you hope to make in markets;

* Psychology alone cannot make you a successful trader, but it can make you an unsuccessful one;

* Quiet markets reveal the best traders;

* Over time, your risk-adjusted returns are more valuable than your absolute returns;

* Trading is a business and, as such, must always adapt to changing market conditions;

* If you can’t make money consistently when paper trading, you won’t be successful when your capital is on the line;

* If someone promises you trading success, keep a close eye on your wallet.

Speculation and Trading vs. Gambling

When does trading become gambling? There is a very thin line. I maintain that most traders ARE gamblers. They use markets as a substitute for a casino.

1. IF you enter trades without a clear trading plan, you just might be a gambler.

2. IF you trade just to be trading, you just might be a gambler.

3. IF your bored and enter a trade, you just might be a gambler.

4. IF you look at potential profit before assessing potential loses, you just might be a gambler.

5. IF you have no impulse control, you just might be a gambler.

6. IF you have no methodology, you just might be a gambler.

7. IF you rely on others for your trading decisions, you just might be a gambler.

8. IF you do not take full responsibility for your trading outcomes, you just might be a gambler.

9. IF you increase your risk due to losses, you just might be a gambler.

10. IF you do not use stop losses or do not adhere to them, you just might be a gambler.

And my all time favorite

11. IF you get an adrenaline rush when your entering trades, you just might be a gambler.

In summation I would like to say that I do enjoy casino gambling as a form of entertainment. I strive to over come the house’s edge when I do gamble. Gambling is entertainment and trading is a business and should be approached as a business enterprise. IF your using the markets as a gambling outlet, be my guest. Traders that approach trading with a positive expectancy WILL take all your money. They will send you stumbling out into the night, cross-eyed and mumbling to yourself. Be smart. You can either feed the trading gods or feed your head. Do the work and get educated before risking one thin dime. Employ laser like focus in your trading and use iron discipline. The end result can be well beyond your wildest expectation.

4 Trading Mistakes

1.  Do the Math
 

Sit down and go over your expected Risk to Reward Ratio for each trade.  If you have already been trading for a period of time sit down and analyse how much you are making each trade and your winning %.  These two numbers will help you formulate a solid profit goal.  No trading strategy works 100% of the time so you need to work out how much you lose per losing trade vs. how much you make per winning trade and then figure in your percentages.  From there you should have a realistic idea of how much you can expect to make in through your trading. 

2.  Don’t Expect Instant Returns
 

Trading is a business and like any other business it requires not only capital investment but time investment as well.  It takes time to find your rhythm and develop your trading skills.  Try not to be to hard on yourself during the learning phase and remember to focus on the positive aspects of your trading.  The vast majority of traders lose money and this number is even higher with traders who are just starting out.  Factor this in when you are setting your goals.

3.  Skill vs. Profits
 

Try to come up with goals that are not directly tied to your P&L statements.  For example, set a goal of following your rules for every trade for an entire trading day.  Once that is completed shoot for an entire week, then a month, and pretty soon you will be doing following your rules without even realising it.   Train yourself to develop your trading skills and reward yourself when you reach those goals. 

4.  It Takes Money
 

It takes money to make money.  Small accounts are fantastic for testing out whether or not trading is for you but when you get serious and want to go full time make sure you have enough capital to support your business.  Solid traders should expect to make 8% in the market over the course of a month.  That equates to 96% over a given trading year.  Make sure this figure allows you to have the lifestyle that you are expecting.
