4 Faiths For Traders

While trading is a game of math, probabilities, charts, and earnings it is also a mind game. Many times a trader’s beliefs will determine their success more than anything else. All traders start out believing it is possible to make money in the markets. Many want to earn their living one day by trading. However it is perseverance, beliefs, and mental determination that will determine who wins and who just quits. Shockingly the majority of millionaire traders lost most of their accounts when they started or they experienced huge draw downs while learning lessons the hard way.

 

  1. You must have faith in yourself. You must believe that you can trade as well as anyone else.. This belief arises from doing your homework and staying disciplined in your system. Understanding that it is not you, that it is your system that wins and loses based on market action will keep the negative self talk at bay.
  2. You must have faith in your method. You must study the historical performance of your trading method so you can see how it works on charts. Also it is possible to quantify and back test mechanical trading systems for specific historical  performance in different kinds of markets.
  3. You must have faith in your risk management. You must manage your risk per trade so it brings you to a 0% mathematical probability of ruin. A 1% to 2% of total capital at risk per trade will give almost any system a 0% risk of ruin.
  4. You must have faith that you will win in the long term if you stay on course. Reading the stories of successful traders and how they did it will give you a sense that if they can do it you can to. If trading is something you are passionate about all that separates you from success is time.

Ignore Your Guts

In my studies I have often found something that is rather interesting and maybe different than most would suspect. The most successful traders I have studied don’t rely on gut calls or feels, but rather adhere to a disciplined set of rules or guidelines and are humbled enough to admit that their emotional decisions aren’t consistent enough to hold up during the heat of the moment.

Ironically, most would think just the opposite that the more successful a trader is, the more ‘feel’ he or she has or the more ‘instinct.’ Sure, it looks macho to make calls or predictions and when proven correct a person is often praised and viewed as having some superior knowledge, but in reality these people are one step below those that have already moved through this stage and left it behind.

As an individual trader it is simply impossible to remain emotionless, making the proper trading decisions at all times, when the action is heated. Even when there is a lull, our emotions kick in and we feel a change is needed or something should be done, when in reality our rules may say to stay put or do nothing.

A lesson on Ego and Risk

ego-riskMost traders drawn to risk management focus on the external “how to” aspect of trading, vs. the inner aspect of emotions and psychology. This is where trouble begins.
• In the school model, one’s self-esteem is tied to being right. Avoiding mistakes, especially public mistakes becomes paramount. But in trading, one can be wrong in most choices and experience regular “outlier” events in the course of trading the markets. Traders must somehow learn that they will miss out or be incorrect regularly and still have a shot at great success. 
• Traders need to have a survival plan. Know when you will get out of a trade before you get in.
• If you don’t take the small loss today, your capital and trading career may not survive tomorrow.
• The most successful traders surrender their egos to not knowing the frequency or magnitude of any trend. They quiet their mind and follow their inner voice.
• Most of the world can’t keep their losses small. Professional traders and investors who’ve been around for decades are usually those who play the best defense

ProfitsThe good traders don’t just come up with promising trade ideas; they have the conviction and fortitude to stick with those ideas. Many times, it’s leaving good trades early–not accumulating bad trades–that leads to mediocre trading results. Because successful traders understand their market edge and have demonstrated it through real trading, they have the confidence to let trades ride to their objectives.

Confidence-No Ego

 Confidence: There is nothing worse than seeing a great opportunity but not having the courage to “pull the trigger” and execute the trade. Freezing up due to fear does NOT happen to great traders. These thoughts don’t even enter their mind because they are confident in their plan. They know wht they will do if the trade goes their way, and perhaps more importantly, they know what to do if it goes against them. Confidence cannot be taught. It comes from making decisions, taking action, and learning from experience.

 No ego:  Successful traders may have big personalities, but they separate their ego from their trading. They might have serious conviction behind their positions, but when the market proves them wrong, they don’t argue with it. They simply move on and accept it.

What characterizes great and successful traders

  • Great traders are not afraid to buy high and sell low.  As you probably know by now the single biggest mistake a trader can make is to hold on to a losing position. Failing to cut losses quickly and letting them develop into huge losses is mentally and financially devastating. The underlying psychology which is responsible for this behavior is the ‘need to be right’ and the fear to sell at a loss. What aggravates the situation is adding to a losing position.  “Do more of the things that work and less of the things that don’t.“

    Unglamorous as it may sound, it looks like the clear winner is hard work and learning the basics. Should this be that big of a surprise? Wasn’t it Thomas Edison who said ” genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”? But it is interesting to note that two of the three put a very high premium on recognizing your trading strengths and focusing on those types of trades primarily.
