Ten Ways to Trade With an Edge

An edge is an advantage that a trader has over his competitors, allowing him to generate and retain profits from other traders . There can be many types of  trading edges through risk management, psychological management, and through better trading methods.

Here are a few:

  1.  A selective trader that only trades the best set ups, trends, and stocks has the advantage of waiting for the fat pitch and not just swinging at every ball thrown his way.
  2. Simply using correct position sizing can put you in the top 10% of traders simply by not blowing out your account and staying in the game by maximizing winners and minimizing losers..
  3. Risking no more than 1% of your capital per trade brings your risk of ruin down to almost zero and allows the trader to survive losing streaks. You have the edge of being around to have a winning streak later on.
  4. Only taking trades with a risk-to-reward of 3 to 1 or better gives the opportunity to have bigger winners than losers in the long run which is needed to be profitable.
  5. Trading in the direction of the trend in your time frame gives you an edge over those losing money by fighting the trend.
  6. Having the discipline to follow a trading plan gives you an edge over those that trade based on fear and greed. (more…)

Winning Streaks vs. Losing Streaks

All traders who last long enough will go through periods of winning and losing streaks.Mathematicians refer to the process as the theory or run known to gamblers as a “streak.”Games of chance  such as roulette ,craps and blackjack are predicated that the house has an edge over the player.Trading  has  a distinct advantage because the trader has the ability to be the house.A mathematical edge is all that is all that is needed by the trader to increase his probability of success.Sound money management advantage begins to work. What happiness in real time trading is that after a series of losing trades the trader will begin to question the system or his ability to execute the system properly.

Tow things are necessary to get though the bad losing times !Belief in your system is very important but it ranks second to the sound money management system.Mediocre trading systems can have positive results with the use of a good money management system. The rule of thumb is to reduce your risk on any trade to 2% of working capital. This should prevent a meltdown but remember trading is about probability not certainty !

The Four Elements Of Successful Trading. Do You have all Four?

The Knowledge

If we don’t do the homework to know what we need to know we will fail due to ignorance. Understanding historical price action, reading books by and about the best traders, seminars, mentor-ships, and  systems testing is all part of the homework we must do to get the needed knowledge.

The Resources

While trading with a small account is a good place to start it is not a good place to stay. Traders must be adequately capitalized for meaningful trading. We must have an affordable broker that does not charge bloated commissions and gives great execution on orders. A trader must have a platform and charting service that is adequate for his trading style. Trading a small account with an expensive broker with poor execution is a path to eventual failure. (more…)

10 Things A Trader Needs to START DOING …To Mint Money

There are many trading principles that are common among  successful rich traders. It is important to learn the things that allow them to win so we can follow in their footsteps and make money. There are 10 things that new traders can start doing tomorrow to improve their results immediately. If you have been trading for awhile but have not been profitable these  may be things that you need to start doing to stop losing money.

 1. Start trading the price action by using charts. The market doesn’t care about your opinions but the chart expresses the collective actions of all market participants. Learn to understand what the chart is saying.

Start to understand that the market determines whether any single trade wins or loses not you and not an imaginary “they”.

2. We can only surf the price waves not control them.

Start to take 100% responsibility for your losses.

3. You enter the trade, you exit the trade, the wins and losses are yours alone. The blame game is a losing game in the markets.

Start to bounce back from losing trades quickly, move on don’t ruminate.

4. If your position size and risk management are correct no one losing trade should emotionally devastate you it should be only one of the next hundred trades with little significance by itself.

Start caring more about what the market is doing and less about what you think it should be doing.

5. ALL that really matters is current price action not your opinion of what might be price action later.  (more…)

Desire -Skill

The Desire
If you are trading just for the money you will quit before you are successful, Why? Anyone without a love for the game will quit during the long difficult learning process. After hundreds of hours of work and years of trading with nothing but a loss to show for all the effort anyone with common sense will think it is too hard and just quit. Those with a love and passion for trading will eventually succeed and usually make six figures or become a millionaire for their efforts. Those that do a cost benefit analysis in the first few years will generally quit due to the math.
The Skill
A trader must have the skill to trade in three dimensions. The management of the mind,  the method, and money management are all crucial for success. Traders must have the discipline and perseverance to trade robust systems through different market environments without giving up. They must have the ability to accept and deal with their thoughts and emotions as they arise during both winning and losing streaks. Risk must be managed on every single trade without the ego causing bets so big that they put your future trading at risk. The trader must also have the skill to not let fear take away the traders ability to pull the trigger on a good entry.

10 Points -Why Traders lose Money

  1. Not honoring your original stops. Big losses make winning systems losing ones.

  2. Quit trading it during draw downs. All systems have losing streaks, the key is to manage risk and stick to it until the system gets make to a winning streak.
  3. Lack of discipline, drifting from taking defined entries and exit signals to opinions is hazardous.
  4. Trading too big, no system can survive huge positions sizing that makes the first string of losses the last.
  5. Style drift is deadly, slowly changing your trading plan during active trades is not good. Research comes after hours and before changes are made. (more…)

Trading Wisdom for Traders

This exchange with a gentleman named Ed Seykota, who turned in a healthy 250,000 percent return for his clients over sixteen years, caught my eye:

What are the elements of good trading?
The elements of good trading are: (1) cutting losses, (2) cutting losses, and (3) cutting losses. If you can follow these three rules, you may have a chance.
How do you handle a losing streak?
I handle losing streaks by trimming down my activity. I just wait it out. Trying to trade during a losing streak is emotionally devastating. Trying to play “catch up” is lethal.

A little later in the interview, there was this:

What are the trading rules you live by?
a. Cut losses.
b. Ride winners.
c. Keep bets small.
d. Follow the rules without question.
e. Know when to break the rules.
Your last two rules are cute because they are contradictory. Seriously now, which do you believe: Follow the rules, or know when to break the rules?
I believe both. Mostly I follow the rules. As I keep studying the markets, I sometimes find a new rule which breaks and then replaces a previous rule. Sometimes I get to a personal breakpoint. When that happens, I just get out of the markets altogether and take a vacation until I feel that I am ready to follow the rules again. Perhaps some day, I will have a more explicit rule for breaking rules.

Never underestimate the importance of psychology and attitude as crucial elements of successful trading.

Vigilance

Vigilance is the non-stop guarding and protecting of important things. In trading there is nothing more important than money. The Professional Trader takes his money very seriously and has given it a more serious term: “Capital”. Capital is everything to the winning trader. It is not just the end goal, it is the means and the source before, during and after the trades. The Professional Trader guards his capital very closely because it will allow him to trade today, tomorrow, next week, next month and next year and beyond. If capital is not protected at all times, then the entire effort for the year can be gone and future opportunities are severely limited. Vigilance in trading means holding the protection of your money, your capital as your constant highest priority. Properly protecting your capital includes starting with enough to trade wisely and be able to stay in the game when the inevitable downturns and losing streaks occur. (more…)

Traders need 3 Keys

#1 Trading is not about winning percentage, being right all the time, or predicting the future. What it is about is having bigger winners than losers. If you are profitable after each long string of trades then you are a winning trader in that time frame. You can make money through winning percentage as long as you keep losers small and you can make money through huge wins even with lots of losses. The key is not how many times you are right but the size of your winners versus your losers. That is the magic elixir of profitability.

#2 Trading is first and foremost about surviving, the vast majority of traders not only don’t make money but they lose most of their trading capital. The only way to have a long profitable trading career is to manage risk and survive a string of losses. If your trading losses are more than 1% to 2% of total trading capital per  losing trade you are in danger of blowing up your account with a string of losing trades or one big loss. To make the journey from new trader to successful trader you have to survive losing streaks and completely unexpected market action. Trading and betting big will eventually take you out of the game, it is only a question of when.

#3 Trading is one of the roughest things a person can do mentally and emotionally. Even if you win in the markets you have to keep up a large amount of personal human capital in perseverance, passion, dedication, focus, and faith in self and system. If you are missing one of these six psychological elements the odds will be against you. You have to cultivate your goals and drive into a vision of success that you are willing to pursue until you get it and pay the price as you go to have the prize you seek.
