Personal Strengths and Weaknesses

We all have different personal strengths and weakness.  Many people focus on transforming a weakness into a strength. While that is admirable, the reality is that it’s not always possible. Although I agree with the basic idea of brain plasticity, and I whole-heartedly agree with the idea of always striving for self-improvement, I also know that as humans we have a certain degree of natural-born temperament and not everything about us can be changed.

Although we can’t always build or change every weakness into strength, the good news is that we can always leverage our strengths, if we know how. And that is mighty powerful. It’s so powerful that if you leverage the right strengths in the right way they can do an excellent job of not just counter-balancing your weaknesses, but can propel you so far ahead  that those weaknesses pale in comparison.

One of the most powerful things you can do for yourself is identifying your natural strengths and then work to see how you can build on them.

We all have different personal strengths, and knowing how to leverage them is an important part of successful trading. A major consideration here is that you try to identify and leverage your own personal strengths, and not simply copy someone else’s. All too often I see struggling traders running from one style to another style whenever they see someone else’s success. One of the primary reasons why copying someone else’s trading style doesn’t always pay off in trading is because of different personal strengths.

Maxims of Baltasar Gracian

Baltasar Gracian (1601-1658) wrote many popular maxims:

33. Know when to put something aside– One of life’s great lessons lies in knowing how to refuse, and it is even more important to refuse yourself, both to business and to others…it is worse to busy yourself with the trivial than to do nothing…All excess is a vice, especially in your dealings with others.

RELAX

If you are ‘in pain’ regarding trading, what is driving you is some other desire not directly connected to trading. You are trying to fix another area of your life that you are unsatisfied with (your job, your relationship, a debt, etc) – and you have projected this onto trading as the solution to your problems. You have to just let this go, stop doing it. If you do this, you are dead as disco. Give yourself a massive time window, the same as it takes to get a PHd.

Trading Nuggets

…to be right or wrong in a trade is NOT a decision. It is what happens. To STAY right or wrong IS a decision..we all trade what we believe happens next. Since NOBODY knows what happens next, we learn to think purely in probabilities. Does not matter what happens next. It is what you DO when you find out what happens next that separates winning traders from losing traders.

—it is a marathon, not a sprint. Your job ONE as a trader is to protect trading equity. Most traders look at what they can make in a trade. NOT what they could lose.

—Trade markets on YOUR terms…as the saying goes…much rather be in cash wishing I was in the market than being in the market wishing I was in cash.

Where’s the Risk?

10 Rules for Traders


  1. Always wait for the setup: no setup – no trade.
     Agree. If your strategy doesn’t provide you a good risk/reward trade to make, then your job is to be patient until it does. Ironically, this often requires you to sit out some very good moves in the market and be inactive at the very same times you want to be aggressive.

  2. The best trades work almost right away. Agree, but with one important caveat – this rule greatly depends upon your strategy. Some strategies will require greater patience than others. If trading short-term, this rule is almost always correct, but if your time frames are longer, then you also have time on your side which requires more patience but that patience can pay off if your analysis is correct.
  3. Never take a big loss. If it doesn’t ‘feel’ right. Remove it!Disagree. Sometimes you have to take a big loss to prevent the risk of an even greater loss. Refusing to take a big loss when a mistake has been made can be very costly. I also disagree with the view that “If it doesn’t feel right, remove it.” Actually, some of the best trades you will ever make in your career are those trades that feel wrong and about as far from “right” as you can make it. Don’t believe me? Think over the last month or so about the trades you missed because they didn’t feel right but your strategy told you to hold or buy them anyway! It is also interesting to me that this rule says to trade by feel and at the same time advises in another rule not to trade by emotion. You can’t do one without the other!
  4. Always perfect your craft and sharpen your skills – good traders are constantly learning. Agree. No matter how skilled, intelligent, and successful you have been, there is always room for improvement. Moreover, because of the ever-growing changing nature of the market, what you do now to trade successfully won’t always work in every situation and the next market environment. Goals for Consistency

Consistency, consistency, this is one of the most important quality I wanna achieve. Here I have a set of goals pertaining to consistency. I got the material from an article sometimes ago. I have no idea who is the author. Anyway, here is the abstract and I have added my own ideas.
I want to consistently..

  • Visualize myself in tune with the market

Seeing oneself in tune with the market and apart of the ebb and flow. Great athletes constantly visualize themselves performing at their peak. In trading, which is purely a mental game, is just as incumbent upon us to do this as well and even more often.

  • Be as professional as possible.

Trading is not a pastime activity. It has to be treated seriouly , and professionally. We have to do the best job ,possible leaving no regrets at the end of the day.

  • Record my trades for review and analysis

By recording our trades and thoughts, we allow ourselves to internalize the markets actions even more and objectively analyze our own actions.

  • Look to be the agressor and proactive

Looking for setups and taking a dynamic approach to the market is critical in succedding. Those that can consistently seek out great opportunities and then execute on them are usually rewarded.

  • Following my trading plan

Having a plan is important. Being able to execute the plan is the key to success. Stick to it.

  • Be patient and hit the same high quality spots

By executing on the same game plan, we remove a great deal of the emotional turmoil that trading can bring.

At last, consistency in our approach leads to consistency in our profits!

Trading Should Be Effortless

  • Money comes in bunches.

That one says it all. You can’t force trades. You can’t simply work harder in order to be ‘in sync’. Sometimes you are, sometimes you are not. You simply have to accept that as being part of the trading business. What you can do, is to closely monitor if your performance is in sync with the market’s performance. If the markets make new highs and your overall portfolio is going down something is wrong. You need to address that issue. Fast. The best way is to step aside and drastically reduce exposure and risk. That’s what I did.

  • Trading should be effortless.

A true piece of wisdom. In my experience when I trade well it is like shooting fish in a barrel. Almost everything works. I don’t need to be overly patient with positions. The money comes in very fast. That’s exactly how trading should be. The exact opposite was the case during the first 2 months of this year. So I did what I had to do. I recognized the situation for what it was and admitted my efforts were not leading my portfolio anywhere. It was like folding when you are dealt a bad hand in poker. So I folded. Now I am waiting for the next hand. If it is a bad one I fold again. If a series of trades start to really go my way I push it hard and increase exposure and trade aggressively.

  • When in doubt stay out.

This one is key. That’s how I interpret the adage: It doesn’t mean you don’t trust your instincts or your methodology. As a trader you should adapt to new situations. You constantly analyze the markets and your performance. Then you adjust your trading. Then you compare your expectations with the actual outcome. Then you adjust your trading. Then you repeat the process. At times things simply do not work. That’s when doubt creeps in. You know something is not ‘feeling right’. Your job is to protect your capital. Your job is not ‘to be right’. Put another way: You should be able to exit or reduce exposure without the need for explanations. The markets usually give you those explanations at some later point in time.

Creative Responsibility

Traders and investors bear a “creative responsibility” in respect to creating something from nothing… starting with a blank canvas (portfolio) and producing profitable and worthwhile results over time.

This notion reflects the craftsmanship embedded in the investment process… trade selection… methodology and process design…

Seven Insights for Disciplined Trading

I’ve always been a fan of Mark Douglas’ work, as my copy of his initial book on trading psychology, The Disciplined Trader, is thoroughly marked up thanks to Douglas’ many innovative ideas about mastering the internal challenges we all face with trading.  His newest book, Trading in the Zone, is full of more great insights. I recently finished reading his excellent follow-up work, and it sparked my review of key points I take out of Douglas’ ground-breaking insights:

1) Develop consistency.  Douglas focuses on how we can create a mindset of consistency by developing beliefs which support us in obtaining this result.  In order to develop consistency, Douglas emphasizes beliefs such as objectively identifying your edges, defining the risk in each trade in advance, accepting the risk to be able to exit a position when a defined loss level is realized, and many other key mindsets that help traders work through the issues they face in taking a trade, making the trade and executing their exit from the trade.

2) Trading is a probability game.  You can’t be a perfectionist and expect to be a great trader. Your losses (that you hope will return to breakeven) will kill you.

3) Jumping in too soon or getting in too late.  These mistakes come from traders not having a well-defined plan of how they will enter the market.  This positions the trader as a reactive trader instead of a proactive trader, which increase the level of emotion the trader will feel in reacting to market movements.  A written plan helps make a trader more systematic and objective, and reduces the risk that emotions will cause the trader to deviate from his plan.

4) Not taking profits on winners and letting winners turn to losers.  Again this is a function of not having a properly thought-out plan.  Entries are easy but exits are hard.  You must have a plan for how you will exit the market, both on your winners and your losers.  Then your job as a trader becomes to execute your plan precisely.

5) Great traders don’t place their own expectations on to the market’s behavior.  Poor traders expect the market to give them something.  When conditions change, a smart trader will recognize that, and take what the market gives. 

6) Emotional pain comes from expectations not being realized.  When you expect something, and it doesn’t deliver as expected, what occurs? Disappointment.  By not having expectations of the market, you are not setting yourself up for this inner turmoil.  Douglas states that the market doesn’t generate pain or pleasure inherently; the market only generates upticks and downticks.  It is how we perceive and respond to these upticks and downticks that determine how we feel.  This perception and feeling is a function of our beliefs.  If you’re still feeling pain when taking a loss according to your plan, you are still experiencing a belief that your loss is somehow a negative reflection on you personally. 

7) The Four Major Fears – fear of losing money, being wrong, missing out, leaving money on the table.  All of these fears result from thinking you know what will happen next. Your trading plan must approach trading as a probabilities game, where you know in advance you will win some and lose some, but that the odds will be in your favor over time.  If you approach trading thinking that you can’t take a loss, then take three losses in a row (which is to be expected in most trading methods), you will be emotionally devastated and will give up on your plan.
