Be Yourself

Everyone in this business will tell you how to be and what to do, but the bottom line is that you’ve got to always be yourself – flaws, emotions, stupidity, and all.

There’s a saying that the stock market is an expensive place to figure how who you really are but I completely disagree. Through the many years I’ve been trading, I’ve learned much more about myself and the way I am both good and bad than I think I would have any other way. And, for that I’m so very grateful.

It is with little doubt that my experience in the markets have in turn made me into a much better human being. For example, one who thinks before acting, one that appreciates the importance of looking at situations from different points of view, one that knows that you can do everything right but still be wrong, one that understands the influence that emotion has on decision-making, one that remembers that no matter what mistakes you and I make today – tomorrow we will have another opportunity to do better. I’ve learned a great deal more, but I think you get the point.

Speaking of which, a number of people have asked me recently that if train people to “be more like me” in my mentorship group. The truth is that I try my darndest to never do that. My goal with those who I personally mentor is to help them become who they really are and, by extension, to take full advantage of their own personality and skills whatever they may be and at whatever level they currently are. The primary problem, however, is that many of us really believe the key to success is to be more like others whether it be Warren Buffett, David Einhorn, George Soros, Doug Kass, Jim Chanos, Whitney Tilson, Jim Cramer, or whoever you admire and respect. As you know, one of the fastest growing businesses on the Internet right now is to enable you in new and exciting ways to trade and invest just like others, but in my view, that will only take you so far in your personal journey. In the markets, sooner or later, you have to find your own path!

Each of us have our own skills, strengths, weaknesses and personalities and matching those with a strategy you can use and develop over time is the closest key to your future success that I can help you with.

Bottom line – don’t be like me or anyone else for that matter, but instead just be yourself. Use this time in your life to find ways to take full advantage of your own God-given talents and skills as you develop them. While it is ok and, in fact recommended, that you try to learn as much as you can from others (I know I have), at the same time you must also understand and appreciate that to true key to success is to find your own path just like every trader and investor who you so admire right now has already done.

  1. pinnumber4Trust your gut If something looks like crap and smells like crap, then chances are, it is crap. Listen more to your gut to tell you when to cut a loss and move on.
  2. Keep it simple If something is working, keep doing it. There aren’t any bonus points for being clever. The money is the same color no matter how you make it. So do the simple things and chip away at the profits. I once had a client who felt he had to do complicated trades in order to make money. Bottom line was, he was wrong. Keeping it simple is the proven strategy for success.
  3. Probabilities don’t lie If you’re not carefully tracking the metrics on your trades, you might as well be gambling at a casino. Make it a point to track the data on your trades and study them. That way, you can do more of what’s working and less of what’s not.
  4. Avoid speculating and predicting I can’t begin to tell you how many times I see traders blow up their accounts because they try to speculate or predict what’s going to happen in the future. The simple fact is, no one knows. Even the best traders have a winning percentage of around 50 percent. That means successful trading is not about being right, it’s about what you do when you’re wrong. The bottom line is, trade what you see, not what you think.

Trading Losses

Those who have chosen this very unique career of “trader” face a mountain of challenges each day based on ever-changing market conditions. Added to the market challenges are emotions, which can be 90% of the game. You can have a great method, strategy and be taught by the best, but if fear, apprehension or hesitation come up the trader won’t take the trade…..this is an emotional block. All successful and experienced traders learn quickly to become the masters of their emotions. To accept and manage their weaknesses and leverage their strengths.

At first most traders start by researching and determining a method to trade. They do little to emotionally prepare for what’s to come. Yet they quickly find out that their emotions come into play early on, especially if they experience immediate losses. Losing money coupled with one’s own emotional “baggage” can impact the minds thought process and outcome.
My work focuses on the power of the mind and in particular the power of thought. These three problems and solutions do too. Nothing happens without the some form of thought, be it sub-conscience or conscience. After all, isn’t this what we’re left with when sitting in front of our monitors trading? What comes into our minds, as we trade can be avalanches of different thoughts. These thoughts then have the ability to assist us and add to our success or become our worst nightmares resulting in multiple losses.

Traders over time, come to the realization that trading will force them to face ALL their old and current emotional baggage and blocks. And that NOT being able to manage or “dump” the baggage, can hit the bottom line quickly.
When a trader’s plan doesn’t work they tend to blame it on the method, when in reality it usually comes down to an emotion causing them to react inappropriately. We can pick up automatic emotional blocks that prevent us from implementing a method effectively. Many try to get over these emotions on their own, but few master the changes needed.

But lets get specific and to the heart of these three trading problems. The first reason traders lose may seem obvious but in reality it stems from long term social conditioning. It’s their inability to ACCEPT LOSS. Losing generates powerful emotions, such as fear, uncertainty, apprehension, and self-doubt especially with men. And while women today can also be as affected, the data is supported mostly by men as they represent a larger portion of the client base.

Men are socially conditioned to succeed from the time they enter the world. From little boys being read, “The Little Train That Could” to the environments that surround them as they grow up. They are guided to be become achievers. Influenced by family, friends, education, and career environments they are encouraged to seek professions of Doctors, Lawyers, and Bankers. Images and social metaphors reinforce them. Striving to be right, number one, the breadwinner, and the best, always seeking perfectionism. They are socially conditioned to be the family providers. Use discipline to eliminate impulse trading

  • Have a disciplined, detailed trading plan for each trade; i.e., entry, objective, exit, with no changes unless hard data changes. Disciplined money management means intelligent trading allocation and risk management. The overall objective is end-of-year bottom line, not each individual trade.
  • When you have a successful trade, fight the natural tendency to give some of it back.
  • Use a disciplined trade selection system: an organized, systematic process to eliminate impulse or emotional trading.

  • Trade with a plan – not with hope, greed, or fear. Plan where you will get in the market, how much you will risk on the trade, and where you will take your profits.
  • Five market scenarios that place you at the most risk.

    1. 1.Bad Markets – A good pattern won’t bail you out of a bad market, so move to the sidelines when conflict and indecision take hold of the tape. Your long-term survival depends on effective trade management. The bottom line: don’t trade when you can’t measure your risk, and stand aside when you can’t find your edge.
    2. Bad Timing – It’s easy to be right but still lose money. Financial instruments are forced to negotiate a minefield of conflicting trends, each dependent on different time frames. Your positions need to align with the majority of these cycles in order to capture the profits visualized in your trade analysis.
    3. Bad Trades – There are a lot of stinkers out there, vying for your attention, so look for perfect convergence before risking capital on a questionable play, and then get out at the first sign of danger. It’s easy to go brain dead and step into a weak-handed position that makes absolutely no sense, whether it moves in your favor or not. The bottom line: it’s never too late to get out of a stupid trade.
    4. Bad Stops – Poor stops will shake you out of good positions. Stops do their best work when placed outside the market noise, while keeping risk to a minimum. Many traders believe professionals hit their stops because they have inside knowledge, but the truth is less mysterious. Most of us stick them in the same old places.
    5. Bad Action – Modern markets try to burn everyone before they launch definable trends. These shakeouts occur because most traders play popular strategies that have been deconstructed by market professionals. In a sense, the buy and sell signals found in TA books are turned against the naïve folks using them.

    Trade with Discipline

    Without discipline, you will be unable to master your ego, create empowering beliefs, have faith, and develop confidence in your abilities. The lack of discipline will prevent your skill as a trader from progressing.”

    Making an occasional winning trade, that ignores your trading plan, may provide short-term pleasure, but entering trades unsystematically can adversely influence your ability to maintain discipline over the long term. Why? When you stop following your plan, you are being rewarded for a lack of discipline. You may start believing that abandoning your plan is therefore not a big deal. Then, whether consciously or unconsciously, you’ll begin to think: “I was rewarded once; maybe I will be rewarded again. I’ll take a chance.” Positive outcomes from undisciplined trading are most often short-lived, and the lack of discipline will ultimately produce trading losses.

    Who cares if the win is from my plan or not? It’s still a win, right! A win that results from following a trading plan reinforces discipline. A win that occurs by chance (deviating from your plan) will increase your bottom line temporarily, but may cause harm to your psyche and be responsible for future unexplained losses.     The harder I try, the more money I lose. What’s going on?

    A:  This is a fairly common phenomenon which is why we have to learn how to adapt to market conditions and be patient with our strategies. Just because you “try harder” doesn’t mean that your profits will expand equally in relation to your effort. While effort helps create and sustain an edge, at the end of the day you still need the market to cooperate with whatever you are doing.

    The best analogy I can provide here is one that many golfers are familiar with. If you’ve ever golfed in high winds, you know that your score will often be higher. Some of this, obviously is due directly to the windy conditions (which you have no control over). However, studies show that the most significant reason why golfers perform poorly in windy conditions has less to do with the conditions but more about how they react to those conditions. For example, many golfers will tend to swing harder in high winds which causes them to lose both their swing tempo and balance and they make more mental mistakes because the wind distracts them. The same is true for traders whose strategies are not flowing with the market. Without realizing it, traders will modify their own approaches (often by trying harder by making trades that don’t fit their strategy) which tends to hurt performance more than it helps.

    Bottom line – keep close tabs on yourself and how you’re “adjusting” to market conditions. Being aware of how the market environment is affecting you and your changes to it is an important skill every trader must possess.
